Border vendors angry at police crackdown
The Nation

30213990-01_big.jpg

ARANYAPRATHET: -- A brief commotion at the Thai-Cambodian Aranyaprathet border checkpoint in Sa Kaew province halted its operation for two hours yesterday.

Cambodian vendors blocked a road leading to it after many with alleged fake or unlicensed products were denied entry by Thai immigration police.

The blockade began at around 9am when Cambodians were angered after Thai immigration police accused many of possessing contraband items and told them to move off.

A large number of protestors, supported by 50 other vendors, used small vehicles to block a bridge on Cambodian soil which is connected with a road leading to the checkpoint.

The immigration police said the restriction was a new policy, explaining later that only contraband items were not allowed and secondhand products were not prohibited.

The Cambodian vendors, through mediation by Cambodian officials, later accepted the restrictions and dispersed at around 11 am.

Inflation level in Aug jumping by 1.59%

BANGKOK, 3 Sep 2013 (NNT) – Permanent Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Watchari Vimuktayon revealed that the inflation index last month increased by 1.59%, citing the Middle East political turmoil which have affected global energy prices as the main reason.

According to Ms. Watchari, Thailand’s inflation index in August stood at 105.41, an increase of 1.59% from the same period last year, but a 0.01% decrease from July. She added the average inflation rate from January to August of this year recorded an increase of 2.47% compared to the same period of 2012.

She attributed the slight decrease in inflation rate from July to price dropping in certain fuel products as well as prices of goods and services. However, she indicated that prices of various commodity goods, mostly soft drinks and food, received small price boosts. The Permanent Secretary clarified that the prices of non alcoholic drink increased by 0.16% while poultry and seafood increased by 1.32 percent. She also said that prices of eggs and dairy products surged 0.96 percent and ready-cook-meal had a smaller jump of 0.19%.

Ms. Watchari said that prices of other items that are not food and drinks had adjusted down by 0.1 percent. Nonetheless, the Commerce Ministry would probably readjust its inflation projection from the previous 2.8-3.4%, adding that it would keep a close watch on the situation in the Middle East as it plays a major role in determining global energy prices.

Alien workers to have access to health insurance

BANGKOK, 3 September 2013 (NNT) – Alien workers will have better access to health insurance, especially pregnant women, who can purchase a health insurance card at the price of 2,200 baht.

Speaking after a seminar on health, Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said the government has a policy to provide health care for 4 groups of people, but the most important group is children under 5 years old guven they need proper care for proper development. The ministry has, therefore, come up with 3 strategies to ensure good health for those groups. These strategies include providing easier access to health services, improving service quality, and working closely with health-related agencies to care for those aliens.

He added that the main issue the ministry needs to focus on right now is that pregnant women, particularly female alien workers, who usually have limited access to health services, do not get appropriate prenatal care these days, causing the fetus to lack proper development,

As a result, the government is encouraging alien workers to purchase health insurance coverage at the yearly cost of 2,200 baht, while a physical examination will cost 600 baht for them. After the baby is born, the mother will be required to purchase health insurance to cover the baby, at the rate of 365 baht a year.
