New season of rice pledging scheme to start on Oct 1

BANGKOK, 5 September 2013 (NNT) – The new season of government’s rice pledging program is set to commence on October 1st, as the cabinet has approved a budget of 270 billion baht for the new scheme.

According to Director of Internal Trade Department Wiboonlasana Ruamraksa, the cabinet meeting on September 3rd gave a nod to the proposed budget of 270 billion baht for the new season of rice pledging program. The pledging price has been set at 15,000 baht per ton, with the maximum of 350,000 baht per farming household. The 2013/2014 rice program will begin on October 1st and will run through February next year.

She further revealed that the off-season paddy will be pledged at the price of 13,000 baht per ton, with the maximum value of 300,000 baht per farmer.

She said around 16.5 million tons of rice is expected to be pledged in the 2013/2014 season, while affirming that all officials will be working under strict measures to make sure there will be no corruption. CCTVs will be installed in rice mills and pledging stations to monitor each transaction.

Major train maintenance planned

BANGKOK: -- The State Railway of Thailand is undertaking a major maintenance on the northern train services in November.


SRT governor Prapat Chongsanguan said that some parts of the track in the North would be closed for fixing. He attributed the frequent derailment along the route to heavy rain and landslides last year.

After a meeting with SRT officials, he said that the train agency is trying to fix the problem.

BANGKOK: -- DEMOCRAT MP Kalaya Sophonpanich denied that she and fellow MPs Kasit Piromya and Nipit Intarasombat had visited former PM Anand Panyarachun to plan a parallel forum on national political reform.

She explained that they had only visited Anand to seek advice, adding that she would ask to meet experts such as Prawase Wasi and Kanit na Nakorn for the same reason.

She went on to say that Anand had given her a book on reforms at the meeting, adding "the Democrat Party will use this book to develop its policy further".

DCA mulls raising airport taxes

BANGKOK, 6 September 2013 (NNT) - The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is planning to raise airport tax rates for the first time in six years.


Director General Woradej Hanprasert said the passenger service charges or airport taxes are set to increase at all 28 airports under the department’s supervision.

For domestic passengers, the rate will jump from 50 to 100 baht and for international passengers from 400 to 500 baht.

Mr Woradej said the addition will be spent on maintenance and improvement of facilities at its respective airports. The DCA is currently seeking approval from Parliament for the tax hike.

The Airports of Thailand Pcl also echoed the DCA’s sentiment, saying that the hike reflects the real costs facing airports.
