Supercharger

I'd like to drop a supercharger into my car. Anyone know if they even import superchargers for say a BMW 7-series (for example, ESS superchargers, etc.)? If so, where? And what is the markup? They run about 6k USD back home excl. labor. Would rather not have some shoddy mechanic do my car as his guinea pig, so can anyone recommend somewhere with experience? (assuming they do this here in Thailand) thanks.

Have heard good things about HKS, not sure of BMW superchargers but they could refer you to a shop.

Do you mean a supercharger like a Roots unit, or a turbocharger run off the exhaust? In either case, it's not something you just bolt on without reinforcing the rest of the engine for increased power. Especially compression ratio, pistons and rings, wrist pins, even straight through the transmission and driveshaft.

I had a factory-made turbo on a new Corvair I once bought; it had countless different parts, properly designed. Later I got a stronger turbo for a used Corvair that wasn't set up for the added horsepower, complete with larger carburetor, and fortunately I didn't even try to install it.

A centrifugal supercharger, i think those are more popular nowadays than a roots-type sc. Definitely not a turbo, as most companies like Dinan, etc. use superchargers rather than turbos because they are more reliable in a bmw application (reliability, of course, is never as good as stock in either case).

ESS, Vortech, Dinan, and possibly others make essentially 'bolt on' superchargers for various bmws, the most important part really is the chip tuning after you've placed the supercharger. I'm no mechanic, but I had an ESS supercharger in a 7 series in the usa and it was an easy job for the guys to put in for me. Chip tuning was key, they didn't just hook it up to a dyno and tune it, but ran it in real conditions with a laptop. the only upgrades I had to make were suspension and brake upgrades to accommodate the extra power. Still works to this day. It really all comes down to the ECU tuning in my opinion... It may have been the case in the older cars (carburetors??!) that you had to change engine parts, but a 282hp V8 from bmw is not under any stress in my opinion as stock, and has a lot of room to play with power before the engine becomes stressed... just my biased opinion of course, because it's one of my favorite engines out there...

Teej,

What year is the BM?Most of the older BMWs here have 2JZ Toyota engines in them purely for the ease of tuning these engines provide.I think your best bet would be to put a post on that bkk car site www.rcweb.net under the BMW section and you should get a reply even if the post is in English.Ive seen a few superchargers here so there must be a store somewhere.

Good luck,

Sky.

I had a look at superchargers and stroker kits last year when I was thinking of tuning my E39 five series. I found a company from the Bangkok post who were called (I think) VRA motorsport. They have both stroker kits and AA superchargers for BMW. At the time they quoted me the following:

Option#1/

Stroker the engine to 3000cc with sport camshaft ,Head modified,And ECU upgrade

Cost =140000 (baht) +55000+18000+25000+Service fee 15000=

Option#2

Supercharger the engine with the AA tuning system=Cost at web site www.aatuning.com

Plus freight around B22000 and tax around 47%

So it's quite expensive. THey also told me that they have done a lot of stroker work and that this modification is quite reliable.

If you're interested give me a PM and I can send you the email of the guy I was dealing with.

Thanks for the info... I couldn't find any supercharger kits for the E38 though... then again, people rarely supercharge and E38.

So what about some simple chip tuning? Free-flow exhaust? These are the simplest upgrades I suppose. Anyone know a decent shop that can work with and E38? Thanks.
