Internet and Cable from a Single Coaxial Cable Outlet?

Recommended Posts

I had True install my cable and internet. I am fine with the tv that is provided for free by the building, yet there is only one coaxial cable outlet near my tv.

I would like to have the free building tv signal, plus the internet from true. When I asked them about doing it without the tv, they said they cannot.

From the information given, is there a way to get the internet from true and the building tv cable from one outlet.

Thanks.

A pass filter on the Internet/TV cable, then a RF signal injector, where the two coaxes come together and a splitter in the room might do it, but it might be easier to get a 2 jack wall plate. And most likely if the Internet and TV can't be split out from the provider, you'd still be stuck paying for cable TV.

I think the issue is the Broadband (cable) Internet provider Network Signal Integrity and security. While many compatible signals can be mixed on the same wire, each at their own frequency, services that use the same competing frequencies can cause major interference back up through the whole system. Even if there were a way to filter and reinject the building's TV system, there'd be no way to guarantee someone wouldn't fiddle with the setup, and then there's the expense of setting it up and regular checks.

If there was a way to run a second coax cable, then no problem. Both systems would remain isolated from each other, (that is, until some fool came in and connected the two cables to a combiner so their TV 'got all the channels'.

You have Two feedpoints now, the old 'free building tv signal' (originating from some locked closet in your building), and new one from the street from True (probably also going into the same locked closet in your building). When True arrived, they probably entered the closet and disconnected the cable on that end and connected it to theirs.

If you only have one coaxial cable going into your residence then it can only be connected to one service, not both, on the other side of the cable.

Is it possible, of permissible, to run a second coax cable to your residence, and use that just for the Internet Modem?

Originally, I wondered if your question was about wanting to have the Internet/TV service from True 'unbundled' to have only Internet. But then you mentioned only having the single coax cable in the wall behind your TV. If you don't need hard-wired Internet (RJ45 LAN) near the TV and you won't be watching the True Cable TV Channels then you could put the Cable Modem anywhere (next to your computer or make into a WiFi connection) and run a NEW coax cable from the True connection on the building to the Cable Modem.

If you want access to BOTH the '
free building tv signal' and True on your TV, then you'll need a second cable, an A/B Switchbox or a TV with Dual Cable inputs.
