NSC: Thailand should not rush itself on BRN’s 5 demands

BANGKOK, 17 September 2013 (NNT) – The National Security Council (NSC) says Thailand should not rush itself over the 5-point demand of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional, while disclosing that the government has an idea to build walls along the border of the southernmost district of Su-ngai Kolok.

NSC Secretary General Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanathabutr stated that the NSC is now carefully studying the 5 demands made by the BRN insurgent group. He said there is no need for Thailand to rush itself over the demands which need to be well thought through before any decision is made.

In its proposals, the BRN calls upon the Thai government to recognize the identity, race and language of the Melayu people, withdraw its troops from the restive southern region, let local security forces take over peacekeeping duties, and offer amnesty to all insurgents.

The NSC Secretary General also mentioned about the government’s plan to build walls along the Su-ngai Kolok border, saying it is only just an idea proposed by the NSC, adding that to materialize the idea, it will take a tremendous amount of money. He went on to say that the Malaysian side has agreed with the idea, but the walls will have to be built on the Thai territory.

Ayutthaya floods after water released from Chainat dam

13793971926112-640x390x2.png

AYUTTHAYA, Sept 17 - Water released from an upstream dam has caused widespread flooding in the central province of Ayutthaya.

Sena district chief Rewat Prasong said people living along the river have been affected after water stored in the Chaophraya Dam in Chai Nat province was released into the central region through two rivers -- the Chaophraya and the Noi.

Residents are now living under 30-50 centimetres of floodwater, with Baan Krathum and Hua Wiang subdistricts being the hardest hit.

Mr Rewat said 1,454 households comprising 5,618 persons have been affected in Sena's seven subdistricts.

The district chief said, however, that as the houses in the affected areas are mostly built in traditional Thai-style with an elevated ground floor to avoid flooding, residents are still in their homes and have begun to use boats for commuting in floodwaters as the roads are inundated. By English News

BANGKOK, Sept 17 – The government may extend the rice purchase programme for the 2012-2013 pledging scheme to late October as requested by farmers in Central region, a Cabinet member said today.

Varathep Rattanakorn, minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and deputy agriculture minister, said related government agencies would discuss the issue to find ways to help farmers.

A group of farmers from the Central region has called on the government to extend its rice purchases for the second crop until the end of next month, saying drought has delayed the harvest.

Regarding soaked rice due to rainfall at a warehouse in Phitsanulok, Mr Varathep said the rice miller agreed to pay for the rice already sold by farmers under the subsidy programme.

“Rainfall has damaged rice in stock. It has nothing to do with corruption,” he said. (MCOT online news)

Redline rail project to be materialized

BANGKOK, 17 September 2013 (NNT) – The redline railway project is set to be materialized as KTB Leasing has approved 3 billion baht worth of debentures to Unique Engineering and Construction PCL to purchase necessary machinery.

KTB Leasing signed two memorandums of understanding with Unique Engineering and Construction Company to provide a loan of 3 billion baht in order to buy machinery and steel materials for the SRT Red Line which connects Bang Sue central station to Rangsit suburban district.

The project consists of two lines. The first one, dark redline, will run from Thammasat University's Rangsit campus to Maha Chai in Samut Sakhon Province, while the other one, light redline, will run from Sala Ya in Nakhon Pathom Province to Hua Mak in Bangkok. Both lines will be passing through Bang Sue which will act as a transfer station to the MRT system.

When completed, the redline train service will accommodate up to 300,000 commuters a day, which will help ease heavy traffic in Bangkok, while distributing economic development and prosperity to other areas apart from Bangkok.
