Advise on Babysitter in Chiangmai

Featured Replies

we have made much effort finding a decent baby sitter for our daughter who live in with us and can also help with house works as well. Our daughter is 5 years old and she goes to school during the day. We had one from Myanmar before and she was decent but she returned home. Much appreciate for advise.

Anyone know where to find live-in babysitter/housekeeper?

To find a babysitter/housekeeper, try advertising in the job centre at Mai Rim Chiang Mai and in a Chiang Mai local Thai newspaper. There is one based in Chiang Mai Land.

Not as straight forward as you might believe.

If you decide to take on a live in babysitter/housekeeper in Thailand, you do so at your own risk and discretion, plus risking the safety of your child.

From experience, I do not advise taking a stranger into your home, whether Thai or Burmese, unless the person comes highly recommended, has been tried and tested and with checkable references, which is almost impossible to do. They could have criminal backgrounds, dishonest and of dubvious charactor, diseases such as AIDs, TB, anything.

Also how much are you prepared to pay a full time live in babysitter/housekeeper? These days starting rates, 13000 baht per month plus food on top, plus time off and holidays. Farangs are expected to pay more, perhaps upwards of 20000 baht per month. Long gone are the days of the subservient Asian house servants.

Another fact is, you may need to obtain a work permit for a Burmese, hill tribe or Thai Yai worker if they are not officially recognised as a Thai citizen. The penalty for hiring staff that does not have the proper paperwork is a fine of 60000 baht and a nasty red stamp on your passports.

My point is, this requires a lot of consideration, especially with a child involved and as I said, whatever you decide to do, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

And if the OPs were members of my own family, I would tell them the same thing.

thanks all for great tips...we had babysitter/housekeeper for almost two years and we do not have immediate family who can do all these house cleaning including taking care of child. Just want to get consensus how everybody is dealing with house cleaning tasks.
