BANGKOK, Sept 23 – A Thai civil society group is lodging a petition with the Constitution Court, seeking its ruling on whether the government-sponsored bill to borrow Bt2 trillion for Thailand’s infrastructure investment is against the national charter.

Suriyasai Katasila, coordinator of the Green Politics Group and a leader of the Thailand People’s Reform Assembly (TPRA), said yesterday that the government’s management of the mammoth budget was unacceptable.

“We don’t oppose mega projects to develop the country’s transportation and infrastructure but we don’t agree with the way the government is managing the budget,” he said.

Mr Suriyasai and Somkiat Phongpaiboon, another staunch opponent of the government, met with leading TPRA members yesterday on their stand towards the Bt2 trillion borrowing and several other issues, including the government’s planned construction of Mae Wong Dam in Nakhon Sawan, impact of energy reform on society, the Amnesty Bill, charter amendment and high cost of living.

He said the TPRA will hold a people’s forum at Rangsit University on October 12 to garner opinions from Thai people countrywide.

TPRA members will also visit rubber farmers in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat to get first-hand accounts of their grievances, he said. (MCOT online news)

Well, the government can borrow two trillion Baht, siphon almost umlimitless amounts of money off into private pockets and most of the people accountable for paying off this debt haven't even been born yet. A set up like this is going to be very hard to oppose or even temper.

Best of luck to those who aren't obsessed with personal greed and still have some sense of national responsibility. They certainly have their work cut out for them.

Not much chance of them winning thouhg.. too bad.

My crystal ball is in the shop. I'll have to see what actually happens in the courts.

I have given up all hope.. the reds totally control it all and will keep plundering the country till there is no money anymore. Then they will blame others and do it all again. This 2 trillion is like a god gift for them... they need it without it their other scams like the rice fraud will have to end. They are not telling anyone how much it really costs and need money to finance it. They will steal and plunder till there is no more this 2 trillion is a good way to hide the losses.

They want the whole 2 trillion now... before they need it they don't want to loan it when they need it and account for it.. no they want it without a plan and years before it has to be spend.. That would be crazy cause you are paying a % for the money. The only reason for it is to hide losses on other fronts with this money.

So its crazy important for them.. no way this is not happening. They are too powerful the Democrats and others just cant stop them.

Here's the main reason why the Shinawatre government is so seized on getting the big money for infrastructure:

China wants to increase and spread its commercial empire. China wants networks of good roads and trains spreading out all over SE Asia - to ease transport of their plastic stuff, copies of western products, and food items.

The Burmese border town of Tachilek is poor, yet they're building foot-thick concrete (15mm steel reinforced) roads - stretching right on up to China. Simultaneously, connecting at the Thai border, Thai construction firms are building similar heavy-duty roads which will run on down to Singapore. Meanwhile, just a few meters from those bomb-proof roads are often mud paths with a sprinkling of gravel - for the locals.

The speedo train project is a fixation for the Chinese-Thai Shinawatre bosses, to please Chinese merchants.

Connect the dots, and you'll see the hoped-for outcome: more commerce, more money for Shinawatre clan, their well-connected buddies, and other Chinese and Chinese-Thai conglomerates.

They sound like a level headed bunch who actually care about the country.

Good luck to them..... they'll need it.

Before you get too carried away, look at the people actually involved. They are in fact the same old quasi fascists and PAD dinosaurs.
