April 24, 200620 yr Tsunami movie coming to Phuket PHUKET: -- A movie is due to start filming in Thailand at the start of May that will take a fictional look at people involved in the tsunami and the impact of its aftermath. The screenplay has been written by Abi Morgan, who also wrote acclaimed Channel 4 drama "Sex Traffic", and the cast will include Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo as well as Tim Roth, Hugh Bonneville and Gina McKee. The movie will be divided into two 90 minute parts and be shown on HBO in America and the BBC in the UK. The film will cover the event from the viewpoints of a couple that are on holiday, an official from an aid agency and a diplomat sent to help locate survivors. The film may be controversial as it attempts to deal with the politics of the tourism industry, how some governments may have downplayed the initial impact of the tsunami and also how aid agencies may have poorly targetted their relief efforts. Kudos, the production company behind BBC dramas Hustle and Spooks, is filming the movie on location in Phuket and Southern Thailand. While some people have commented that it may be too early for a feature film about the Boxing Day disaster others point out that countless documentaries have been produced already and that feature films about subjects like the 9/11 terror attacks or even the Iraq War have also been released or are currently in production. --Phuket Post 2006-04-24

While some people have commented that it may be too early for a feature film about the Boxing Day disaster others point out that countless documentaries have been produced already and that feature films about subjects like the 9/11 terror attacks or even the Iraq War have also been released or are currently in production. Although I support the film I disagree with this sort of defense. Just because other people have made movies that are perhaps insensitively timed, doesn't excuse this one. But again, I don't think it is necessarily too early for a tsunami film.
April 26, 200620 yr A friend is working as an extra on the film and reports that local extras (who were living on Phuket during tsunami) are being hired - which could add a touch of authenticity to the scenes as many of them worked as volunteers during the actual crisis. He seems to think the script is quite accurate and not overly insensitive. He did, however, complain about the food!

April 26, 200620 yr Yes you are correct Khall they are paying in Thai rates... But its too cheap...for this kind of movie.... offcouse they are paying for the accomondation and flights to phuket from bangkok returned... but the salaries per day is too small... Its better to do a short commercial
May 3, 200620 yr If anyone is interested to visit the 'shooting' location, the film producers have recently (today 3rd May), based themselves just behind my house in Ban Saku, a few km from Nai Thon beach where filming will take place. I personally don't agree with this film, so I'm tempted to deflate the tyres on the 10 coaches parked outside my house .....
May 5, 200620 yr to see a mini-video of the Director General of Tourism Development, at the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, whose department was also in charge of approving the filming for the new Tsunami movie, The Aftermath, here in Phuket & Phang Nga, go to http://www.thaisnews.com/news_detail.php?newsid=171555
May 5, 200620 yr While some people have commented that it may be too early for a feature film about the Boxing Day disaster others point out that countless documentaries have been produced already and that feature films about subjects like the 9/11 terror attacks or even the Iraq War have also been released or are currently in production. And they also have been controversial. Recent example is the made for tv movie Flight 93 which I recently watched and found disturbing even now.
