BANGKOK: -- University students from the Youth Network Against New Drinker, a Thai teetotaler organization, has called for a ban on alcohol sales near academic institutions.

Teerapat Kahawong, co-leader of the network and the least popular kid on campus, submitted a petition to Education Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng, via his adviser Thanesh Charoenmuang, urging the minister to make universities alcohol-free.

He said many shops and pubs located near campuses are selling alcohol to students under the legal drinking age.

Youth group calls for tightened control on liquor sales near university campuses

BANGKOK, 25 September 2013 (NNT) - A youth network has called on the Education Ministry to tighten law enforcement on the control of alcohol consumption around university campuses, after a recent survey shows that numerous liquor stores are situated just within the 300-meter radius from their campuses.

Mr. Therapat Kahawong, coordinator of the Youth Network for Curbing New Drinkers under the Juvenile Development Foundation, led 30 students from several universities in handing out the petition to high-ranking Education officials.

Recent findings show that there are more than 340 liquor stores operating within 300 meters' radius of 12 leading private and government-owned universities. The group claimed that those stores have violated the 2008 Alcoholic Beverage Control Act.

The network also urged the Education Minister to play host in the fight against the spread of alcoholic drinks among students. They suggested the ministry draft an organic law for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act to ban alcoholic consumption within a 300-meter radius of any university.

The group believed that by implementing the ban, the issues of alcohol-induced violence and surfacing of new drinkers would significantly decline.

OK. Ban alcohol sales near universities. What is that going to achieve? They will just get on their bikes ride 300 meters and buy alcohol. Well that's what I would have done at their age.

30 students from several universities.

Doesn't seem to have widespread support from the masses.

More regulations, more prohibitions, more laws that will not be enforced...

When will Thai- people finally accept, that they themselves have a responsibility for themselves and their children!?

I grew up and went to school in a so-called workers quarter in my hometown, with pubs and shops that sold alcohol every 100 meters...and most of us didn't grow up to be heavy drinkers!

Is there a 'University students from the Youth Network encouraging New Drinkers'?

What a sorry bunch of students. If you don't wanna drink alcohol, fair play to you. Get on with you life, but don't judge others and try to stop them from something because you don't partake in it. Be happy in the knowledge that you'll have a healthier body.

As long as alcohol is legal, adults have the right to buy it. All you can do is educate people on drinking responsibly.

I wonder why they call it "inexplicably"?

In my professional opinion, this would require lecturers to travel much further to slake their thirst.

Banning drinking near or in universities - Hah - Seriously!! On of the best things about going to Uni was the drinking down at the SU bar.

Why the word "Inexplicably" in the OP? burp.gif

Why the word "Inexplicably" in the OP? burp.gif

guessing it popped out of their leader's mouth in between a shot and a burp...

Why what will that achive? Its like saying you cant get booze on a dry day.... Huh yeah whatever !!

If the students are really that concerned about then lock them confine them to the campus during the hours when alcohol is served in the real world outside the university gates. wink.png

One does not even know where to begin...

Beggared yet again!
