Italian runs from Thai girlfriend, arrested in Phuket for two year overstay

Domenico Amodio was arrested for overstaying in Thailand.

PHUKET: -- Phuket Immigration police yesterday (September 24) arrested Italian man Domenico Amodio, 48, for overstaying his visa for more than two years, after they found him sitting on the pavement near the Surin Circle clocktower.

Immigration police, led by Pol Lt Col Chidchanok Sakornyen, were doing their regular patrol around Phuket Town when they came across Mr Amodio.

“On the way to the Metropole Hotel, we ran into a foreigner sitting on the pavement, looking different from usual tourists – he seemed like he didn’t know where to go. He also had a bag which had a few clothes inside,” Lt Col Chidchanok said.

Police asked him to show his travel documents, but he didn’t have any, so he was taken to the Immigration Office in Phuket Town.

In the database, police discovered that he arrived in Thailand via Phuket International Airport on May 23, 2011. His permit to stay expired on June 21, 2011. He was arrested and was transferred to Phuket City Police Station for processing.

“Mr Amodio told us that he had a Thai girlfriend in the north-east of Thailand, but that he had had a fight with her and run away to Phuket, leaving his passport at his girlfriend’s place [in Chaiyaphum province],” Lt Col Chidchanok said.

oh well if the police were running with the same energy after rich murderers who fled to S'pore or Dubai , Thailand would be heaven ..... I feel pitty for that guy , how could he survive for 2 years like this ? and for his passport , he could go to the Italian embassy and pretend it was stolen and got a new one .... all this is strange .....

If I had little money and was on long-term overstay, I wouldn't be heading for Phuket. It seems as if busting foreigners on overstay is top priority there and spot-checking of passports is de rigeur. Not carrying one seems to be a big deal and reason for arrest or further pavement detention. I have never seen this happen here in Chonburi.

So, on reflection, even though I have got lots of money and am not on overstay, I won't be going to Phuket anyway as I would rather not be hassled by the uber-corrupt cops for no reason.

His girlfriend probably chucked him out as he has no money, with money most Isarn girls will love you. I do feel sorry for people like him but most Thais don't give a s..t if a foreigner is broke. There again so many of the Thais don't have money but they do seem to take care of each if even to share a room etc. Thailand really needs to do more to help people down on their luck, most of them have given away fortunes to Thai hookers from Isarn so they deserve some respect and some funds allocated back to them in terms of a room and trying to find out what skills they have to get a job, not just being checked out. Sadly though it all comes down to MONEY this is what most countries do if you are caught overstaying.

Been in Phuket for six years and never been asked for my Passport even when stopped by the Police at road blocks for helmets etc. That said with recent events I now have a colour copy with my Visa Stamp and the departure card. I would never carry my Passport on my bike as if I lose it, or it is stolen I have to go to BKK and I heard it takes about a week, so a waste of money. If that's not good enough for them they can take me to the local Immigration and check but I won't be spending a fortune going to BKK, hotels etc There are far bigger problems in Phuket than catching overstayers.

Of course they dont have visas or work permits etc- but this witch hunt is only after the Farang. They have decided that the western foreigner is the root of all Phukets problems.

TBH, I think most people know this too, you should pretend you have less money than you have then the people who are after your money usually will disappear unless ofcourse they find out that you have money again.

Nobody, unless ofcourse you are really wealthy can deal with the constant demands of people trying to get money from you left right and center because they are too bone idle to work

Burmese people will generally work for less than Thais and work harder also, how many businesses would suffer if they couldn't find Burmese workers?

Usually, the Burmese workers have to pay the police monthly also so that they can stay and work and don't get deported, the ones without passports etc.

Mean while the real criminals and low life scum go about their daily business with absolute impunity...

Actually the Thai employers pay the police/immigration for the illegal Burmese they employ. So they lose a bit from what they save on salaries.

These immigration police are just a crack unit aren't they.... I mean look how they have arranged themselves in order of ascending height right to left... such organisation, such diligence.. so you caught a farang who was down on his luck on 2 year overstay.. does it really take four of you to process and get in the photo shoot for the credit.. do you not have bigger fish to fry.. move along .. no story of any substance ..... I hope the Italian man finds good luck and prosperity in his future... we all go through times where we are at bottom... hopefully he has the ability to leap back up.
