thaibebop
I like art and I like all kinds of art. So, I am starting this thread for a few reasons. One: To share what we like. Two: I hoping to learn more about Thai art, for any art for that matter. Although, I find it hard to come across Thai art. I am not speaking of just traditional, but modern Thai artists as well. Three: I want to know about Museums in Thailand, or in Asia. In the west we always hear about the top museums in America and Europe, but never in Asia. So, if you know some museums in Thailand or else where please share. So, what I like, is quite a bit. Song Dynasty landscapes, Zen paintings, Impressionism, etc. I will just post some pics.

Hi thaibebop, not often do we see fine art mentioned on tv,though it is listed under the photographic section.I am a painter living in isaan but I cannot help you re Thai arts or galleries. I do recall seeing lots of adds for exhibitions in the Bangkok post and Nation, probably the sunday editions. Most of them were for contemporary artists.Being out in the sticks I do not get these papers anymore.I have been doing a lot of painting out here, landscapes, portraits and still life.I have been trying very hard to get a Thai flavour into my work, without producing Thai style paintings if you know what I mean. It's surprisingly difficult,my latest work looks very Mattise like because of the rich colour and patterns. My work used to be very impressionistic and I particularly liked Monet.I remember seeing an exhibition of his paintings several years back in London.Mostly the smaller waterlily paintings, which I thought, when hung all together became rather dull. His best works are to be found in the Orangerie behind the Louvre in Paris.Fantastic, huge canvasses that go all round the oval shaped room, also reaching the ceiling. As you walk in you get the same feeling of grandeur and awe that you get when you enter a great cathedral, they really are awe inspiring. If you have seen them you will know what I mean, if you haven't you have a real treat to look forward to. They are also of his lily pond but far more expressionist, really strong vibrant colour.Anyhow enough of my ranting, think I shall go for a beer. Cheers for now.... I am glad I am not the only one who loves fine art. I would be interested in seeing your work if you ever take photos of them. I like Mattise's colors more than his shapes. I have always enjoyed more texture and construction then bright color. Which is why I like Rembrandt and other barque painters. Impressionism is I guess the exceptation to this, unless you consider the colors themselves to hold the texture of the paintings, which some do and some don't. I would love to see all this art in person. I know how much difference there is between seeing it and seeing a photo of it. I have not had the money to travel though. I am lucky that where I live, Kansas City, Missouri has one of the US best museums, well a top ranked one anyway, The Nelson-Atkins. They have Waterlilies, one of my faves. I am glad someone is painting in Asia. It seems to me thatt he art world of the west ignores Asia art and even Asian themed art. I wish you the best of luck, if you are trying to sell that is. If not, then enjoy and show it off once in awhile.
seonai
Bebop and Phusing, I am reading this late at night but PLEASE can we keep this thread going. How amazing to be able to chat about art here on TV. I am not going to write now as I have had a few swift ones but I'd love to contribute later. For the record, when I was living in BKK some years ago I often went to the art university near the river, Silapakorn. Most students told me they were restricted by teachers to 'traditional' Thai art - a formula using geometric (?) and precision techniques. Beautiful but unimaginative and frustrating for the artist unless used in a meditative manner.
suegha
I like all art, okay some more than others, but I have favourites in all types of art. I don't know anything about Thai art but I do know that the shops doing reproductions here are amazing - so if you want a dood forgery, come to Thailand. I am a keen artist myself, I have moved through several styles, as well as reproductions, and now I prefer abstract expression. Most of my paintings are deeply symbolic. Any other aspiring artists in tv land?

Both Monet and Manet. All of Monet and Manet's later work. Vermeer, The level of detail is extraordinary. That's enough for now, I'll post again when I think on! Tippaporn
Not sure of the artist's name for this work of art, but I believe she lives in Thailand. The medium used was flesh and blood. The backdrop is amazingly everchanging, which is due to not only the viewer's perspective but also from the artwork's itself. One of the unique aspects of this piece is that it needs to be stored in a very warm climate, not less than 26/28 C. The dimensions are life-size. I'm not sure whether this piece can be purchased, but if so I believe the price tag would be very high. And it would come at a high risk of being stolen. LaoPo
So what has kept you all from posting in “The Photography and the Arts” Forum? May I invite you to post there? Yours truly, Kan Win Kan,...Thaibebop pointed me to this topic and I missed it. Sorry. The problem with 'Photography and the Arts'-thread is the Title. It's a bit of a misconception/misunderstandig; I just checked it and it's 99% about photography. There's nothing wrong with that of course, but not really the thread one would post topics about ART...and I mean art in general. Now, please do not misunderstand me, because I think ART in photography is also an art on itself. If one reads: 'Photography and the arts' you think of ART in photography rather than paintings, sculptures etc. That's why I NEVER EVER thought of the thread in connection with paintings or sculptures and the like. I hope though there could be some other thread set-up, just about ART-CREATED-BY-HANDS in general. LaoPo

Do you mean that we should post THE ARTS in the 'Farang pub - fun....etc.' Forum or in the Photography Forum? As you can see, the 'Photography and the Arts' is a sub-thread under the MAIN FORUM: THAILAND PHOTOS.... I'm sure there are more people than just a few (including Ladies ) members who are interested in Art but not necessarily ALSO in Photograpy...meaning: Art-lovers wouldn't look in the main forum THAILAND PHOTOS for Arts. Well, let's see if George or Mods can change something. Thank you LaoPo Edited May 23, 2006 by LaoPo

tutsiwarrior
Any one like Romanticism? This is The Raft Of The Medusa. my all time favorite...I spent more time admiring it than all the other works on display at the Louvre combined...including the Mona Lisa. I was prepared as 10 years before my visit there was a series in The Guardian that examined famous and not so famous works and 'The Raft...' was one of the subjects. I snipped the photo from the paper and sellotaped it beside my In-tray...never failed to attract attention in a dull and featureless office in Brighton. Too bad that the ship that the doomed sailors were waving at cannot be seen in the photo...just a speck on the horizon... (to those that allege tutsi as wanting to aggrandise, it's true...I'm the guy on the top frantically waving a rag at the possibility of survival that slowly and inexorably slips away...tutsiwarrior: a doomed romantic hero...) I want to get the biggest reproduction that I can find to hang in my shophouse in Suphan...anyone going to the Louvre and willing to bring back a 3 meter museum repro print cylinder in hand luggage please PM...
