CHIANG MAI Zoo is hoping to celebrate the birth of a second giant panda after New Year 2014 following the insemination of Lin Hui with sperm from Chuang Chuang.

The mother and father of Lin Ping are on loan from China. Zoo director Thanapat Pongpamorn said yesterday that the insemination of Lin Hui was carried out on Saturday and Sunday.

The team had experience and the ability to make Lin Hui pregnant with a second baby panda, he said.

Boripat Siriaroonrat, assistant director of the Bureau of Conservation Research and Education, said the research team had the best plan for completing the artificial insemination and Chuang Chuang's sperm was of high quality.

The only thing that the researchers were anxious about was this month is not a time when pandas are in heat.

Vegetable prices have increased due to recent floods

BANGKOK, 30 September 2013 (NNT) - A survey conducted in a fresh market in Bang Khae has found that the recent floods has caused the prices of vegetable to increase.

The survey conducted on consumer goods prices in the fresh market of Bang Khae district has indicated that there has been a slight increase in the prices of green vegetables in the past week. For example, coriander price has gone up to 180 baht per kg, up from the 120 to 150 baht charged last week. The price rise is attributed to heavy rains in several areas leading to floods, which have caused agricultural products such as green vegetables to spoil. As for the prices of other vegetables, celery now costs 100 baht per kilogram, onion 80 baht per kilogram, kale and lentils 50 baht per kilogram, cucumber 30 baht per kilogram, and cabbage 25 baht per kilogram.

Meanwhile, prices pork, poultry and eggs remain fairly stable, with the price of pork meat, sirloin and tenderloin being 128 baht per kilogram; a bit over the 124 baht per kilogram set by the Department of Internal Trade. Chicken breast is at 80 baht per kilogram, chicken fillet at 90 baht per kilogram. However, the prices of eggs remain unchanged. The price is 130 baht for a carton of thirty size-0 eggs, 120 baht for size 1, 117 baht for size 2, 115 baht for size 3, and 114 for size 4.
