BANGKOK: -- Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport will be closed for all commercial flights on specific times during October 5-October 9, to accommodate the arrival of many Heads of State to the APEC Summit in the island.

All airlines are notified that the airport will be closed on Saturday, 5 October, from 10.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs. local, Central Indonesia Time; Sunday, 6 October from 10.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs; on Tuesday, 8 October also from 10.00 - 20.00 hrs and again on Wednesday, 9 October from 10.00 hrs - 16.00 hrs.

Bali is welcoming many Heads of State and official delegations to the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit. Some will fly in by Presidential planes. Meanwhile, according to the Committee for the Preparation of the APEC Summit, 1,200 CEO's are expected to attend the CEO Summit from October 5-7, while a large number of CEO's will arrive by private planes.

Indonesian Tourism announced that In this connection, Garuda Indonesia announced that on these dates the airline will cancel 139 flights, which include flights from Bali to Narita, Osaka and Haneda in Japan, and a number of flights to Singapore on the international routes.

AirAsia also announced that it will be adjusting flight schedules, from and to Bali. A total of 53 AirAsia flights will be retimed and 81 flights will be cancelled.

Did the airport really decide only 48 hours before to restrict commercial service. If this summit was planned months in advance and it was necessary to cose the airport for certain hours, it would make much more sense to notify airlines in advance so they could cancel or re-time flghts as early as possible to prevent last-minute cancellations.
