Popular Post theblether
Summary, the guy offered a computer for sale for 8,000 baht, a German guy offered 6,000 by email, he told him to eff off by email and the German guy got him charged with defamation. The guy was arrested, then released, then rearrested, passport seized and 60,000 baht bail demanded for further release. His lawyers are convinced the case if illegal, the prosecutor agrees but the German guy is like a dog with a bone and he's appealed. The prosecutor says that the appeal must run but he'll win in the end. Meanwhile back at the farm he's diabetic, he requires a leg operation, and has a shoulder problem. He's got no cash left and he reckons that if he doesn't get his passport back he may lose his leg and starve to death before the appeal is heard. The Canadian Embassy is doing nothing to help him. What do I think? When I get a stupid offer by email I ignore it. So ridiculous as it is it's a self inflicted wound. The German guy is entitled to appeal, what does this guy expect the Embassy to do? Swoop in and bypass Thai law? Everyone knows that our Embassies will not get involved in cases like this. He's caught in a web of his own making, all because he just couldn't resist answering a cheeky email. In saying that though, what he appears to be at risk of losing ( his leg ) is a price too high to pay for a bit of nonsense bureaucracy. If that's true, then he's needing to get it confirmed by Doctors and to present the evidence to the authorities. He's needing help. As for the starvation issues etc, turn to friends or family, still being active recently as an engineer in the oil trade, there must be someone he knows out there that can feed him for a few weeks. To be 52, active in employment. and can't turn to anyone for help is a sorry state to get yourself in.
Popular Post Gsxrnz
Ok, sounds like a sad story and the guy claims he will die in 2 weeks and only has food for 2 weeks, and no money. His Youtube channel shows that last week he bought a microphone for his guitar that is listed at costing 50 GBP. The week before he listed a video showing him and his three musician buddies having a real good jam session in his condo. Another recent video shows his rather nice looking condo with plenty of consumer goodies. He paid CAD24,000 tax for working 4 months in Canada last year. Just an observation. Popular Post johnbarpic
try a counter sue of the german for defamation as he wrote not a nice email or try the route of threatening aggressive email if that was the case. Seems to me the German has friends in high places for to even get to this point. a reflection of the politically correct world we live good job he never tried to buy it from a UK Scouser the reply would certainly not been as polite.. Good luck with you quest

The system is screwed up for everybody. I agree. He's done something stupid that has consequences. Nothing suggests being a foreigner had much to do with it and I can't see the implication in the thread title of a foreigner being treated unfairly. Didn't watch the video, but presumably he's only providing one side of the story. If his own embassy can't see a reason to intervene in what amounts to a civil case or because of supposed medical issues, he must not be very convincing to them either. Seems more another case of a TV poster trying to promote an us-versus-them situation where one doesn't exist. Popular Post Jingthing
I hope this man gets help soon. I don't care whose "fault" it was. One wider "lesson" for people reading this. The insult the Canadian used is MASSIVELY more serious an insult in Thailand than it is in the U.S. or Canada. You can get killed for that here if done in person. I don't know about how that insult is viewed in Germany though. Perhaps some expats have internalized Thai values about such insults. BTW, does someone know WHERE in Thailand this Canadian lives? If he is an expat area, surely there are people who would be happy to directly provide at the very least some foodstuffs. Popular Post Netizen
The story sounds incredible in a number of regards. Was the German guy named Adolf? I can understand the disinterest of the Canadian Embassy and the Canadian government because 2 Canadians are rotting in a jail in Egypt on trumped up charges and the Canadian government has not attempted any serious assistance for them. Canadian population is not very humanitarian and generally believe that any Canadian held in a foreign country deserves their fate and that government should not help Canadians held overseas. It's my understanding from an incident I was involved in that you can only commit defamation in Thailand in Thai language. I wasn't aware that it was a crime in any country to insult somebody. This guy must have at least 800,000 Baht in a bank account in Thailand to get a visa. This is more than enough for his medical treatment. My opinion is its some sort of scam and if this guy is really in trouble his video won't help at all. Why has his story not appeared in the media if it is indeed true? Claims he was arrested by immigration which has nothing to do with defamation or insult cases. Summary: Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
pastafarian
IF this story is true then it's the German guy who is being the bigger d1ck, yes the Canadian shouldn't have replied to the email but for the German guy to then do what he's supposed to be doing, insane! And how does this guy have no money? It's no secret the oil/gas boys earn very good money, there's enough of them on here that confirm that whenever they can, so how is he totally skint?! Andre0720
Since Germany has never anything bad to anyone, it is therefore unacceptable to address a german national using some words that could be construed as insulting...
Popular Post Madgee
IF this story is 100% true then the guy has my sympathies concerning his health issues and the predicament he is in. So many things just don't make sense, especially if you take the time to look at his YouTube channel. He paid $24,000 income tax recently? That's earning around 3 million baht? He has some serious money 'play' equipment in his condo and obviously likes a drink or two of decent booze. Not just one telescope but some serious looking binoculars on the balcony 'for bird watching' .... in the middle of what looks like Pattaya. No money for food etc? .... Then sell some of the goodies! Ask the musical buddies for a sandwich? Sorry, IMHO, this guy has got into some unnecessarily caused trouble, not knowingly of his own making and his gripe is with the Canadian Embassy who he expected to wipe his @ss. I certainly have some reservations about the true validity and motives of this story.

monty1412
How does telling someone to eff off constitute defamation and I ask on tow fronts 1) In telling someone to eff off you are not actually defaming them... no accusation or naming being done 2) If it was by private email i.e only between him and the German then doesn't there need to be at least a third party involved to make it defamation.... Confused here how this even gets to court ket alone gets attention of police... Does one suppose the obvious inference in all of this... ???
ukrules
I'd like to know what the German Embassy think about this situation. I also wonder if making the derisory offer for the computer could be construed as an offence which warranted a retaliation in kind.

Offering 6000 for something listed at 8000 is hardly derisory or insulting. If it was the whole bargaining culture in Thailand would collapse into anarchy. The guy is dodgy. He is not broke.
ToddWeston
Something fishy - He is from Ontario I read on another site - he simply can't get off the plane and go to the hospital. If you reside out of Ontario for more than 212 days there is a 3 month waiting period. There is an out of country policy in place for overseas residents ranging from 2- 5 years but he says he's lived in Thailand for 12 years and only worked a few "months" in Canada last year not meeting the 153 day residence requirement for two consecutive years. Briggsy
Sounds similar to the Lee Chestnutt case. He was falsely accused of a crime and ended up stuck here for over 3 years with his passport confiscated and on an immigration stop list. This Canadian guy could be stuck here for a very long time, unable to work too. As someone else pointed out, there are 2 sides to every story. And as the Canadian guy said I hope it doesn't happen to me.
