Is there a special plumbing putty?

An attempt to simply replace the pop-up stopper in my bathroom sink has lead, in stages, to replacing the entire trap plumbing up to, and into, the plumbing pipes in the wall.

The plumbing in the wall is blue PVC pipe. The new trap system is metal (steel?) which is a smaller diameter than the PVC pipe in the wall. When I asked at HomeWorks how to seal the gap between the pipes, they said to use silicon.

Knowing that Thais use silicone for *everything,* I wondered if there were some better, specialized putty or foam or something specifically for sealing plumbing joins. If so, what should I look/ask for? Or, is good old silicon the best solution?

There's a 2 in 1 epoxy putty called "Aqua Putty" available in the hanging glue section of Home Pro. I've used it to seal leaks in joints, holes in large plastic bowls, etc. It can be used under water and sets up hard. But' I've also used silicon in places where there is no pressure, works well also and can be removed easily if you have to replace the pipe at a later date.

Thanks. I'll look for the Aqua Putty. I'm hoping it's really a putty like the name. I'm horrible at caulking/applying silicon, and in the small confines in a cabinet under the sink, I'd be hopeless. A putty might be easier for me to manage.

you can get a rubber gasket for these at Boonthavorn fits over the metal part and then pushes into the plastic waste pipe has several ribs to seal, this is the only place I have seen them, silicones crap it shrinks a bit often leaks and is a BODGE.

This what they look like although this is off a UK vent pipe its the same idea but smaller, fits the small bore sink pipe on the outside then goes inside the larger bore usually 2 inch waste pipe.

Interesting. Now that the floods seem less numerous, I can venture further out. Might check out Boonthavorn for that.

My bathroom sink has been out of commission for almost a week now. I just use the kitchen sink. Ah, the joys of bachelorhood. smile.png
