ACCIDENT
23 killed and injured in Buri Ram were illegal Lao migrants

BANGKOK: -- Director general of the Department of Employment yesterday revealed that nearly all 23 victims of the horrific crash on Monday in Buri Ram's Ban Dan district were illegal Laotian workers.

Only one person was undergoing the national identification process, Prawit Kiangpol said. So, the department would send the workers who survived back to Laos and would work with anti-human trafficking police to block the smuggling of alien workers into the country, he said.

The death toll from the accident rose to 19 yesterday, as two more succumbed to fatal injuries in Buri Ram Hospital, while four of the five still in hospital remain critical. The pickup truck, carrying 23 workers and one driver, was heading for Ubon Ratchathani when it crashed into a tree.

The headline says 23 killed and then later in the last paragraph it says the death toll rose to 19. And the 23, in the truck, were "illegal." What about the driver? Was he Thai? Did he run? Will their be investigation to get him to disclose his higher ups and potential Mr. Thai Bigs?

A tragic loss, but the police will watch thousands of overloaded pick ups go past them again today and do nothing.

Deaths 19 - Learned 0

would they have any insurance?

would the driver have a lgv licence?

do the vehicle have seat belts?

all the passengers illegal migrants.

So what about finding the Thai national(s) who either assisted these people (for a fee of course) to enter Thailand along with whoever may have been about to employ them or perhaps we should say ''bind these poor souls into a debt bondage situation.

The total disdain shown by the Thai's is as usual appalling they think they are so superior to the rest of their fellow Asian neighbours, wait till A.S.E.A.N. kicks in then the truth will out.

About as much chance of the above happening as there is of selling pork pies outside a mosque or a synagogue.

May need to re-read the headline - 23 killed and injured.

Hmmm....

"The death toll from the accident rose to 19 yesterday, as two more succumbed to fatal injuries in Buri Ram Hospital, while four of the five still in hospital remain critical. The pickup truck, carrying 23 workers and one driver, was heading for Ubon Ratchathani when it crashed into a tree."

Somehow I get 24 killed and injured. But then, I never could add without a calculator. tongue.png

Read the original article, the driver was Thai, he died instantly, no further info will be gleaned from him.

The main point is who was driving? Were there charges? Was the driver a Thai runner? Are the police interrogating the driver if they have him? Could he lead to a Thai Mr. Big?

Read the thread before you post.

would they have any insurance? Probably not

would the driver have a lgv licence? Would the Thai driver have a Thai licence. He wasn't driving an LGV.

do the vehicle have seat belts? Do pickup trucks have seat belts in the rear truck bed?

all the passengers illegal migrants. Sounds like it., Just another load of freight to some people. Pack 'em in, move 'em out!

A huge tragedy, the type that will continue in Thailand until the police enforce the laws.

But, hey, they were only Lao illegals, so...................?

The article heading says 23 killed and injured, it does not state how many were on the vehicle.

later it says "while four of the five still in hospital remain critical"

So I would assume 19 killed + 4 remaining critical. Some how the other person avoided any injury. Not sure how that could be possible.

What were 23 people doing in the back of a pickup truck? What were they trying to go for the Guinness book of records title for the most number of passengers carried by one pickup truck? Maybe Thailand should ban passengers from traveling at the back of a pickup, period. One need just go to nearby countries to find that nobody travels at the back of a pickup in such countries as Malaysia, Vietnam and China. Why can't Thailand follow their lead? The Vietnamese think traveling at the back of a pickup is for cows or pigs, not humans. Go figure...

23 of the killed and/or injured were 'illegal" Lao immigrants. The other was the "legal" Thai driver. That makes 24. But in any case, can't we just agree that there were far too many people on the vehicle (rather than in the vehicle) in this tragic incident without dickering over the headline?

Who cares about their nationality? They were human beings! whistling.gif

But they weren't Thai, so they don't count.

sadly enough that is true.... the Thai mentality is that it is their own fault they are dead, if they weren't in Thailand they would still be alive. In fact, they are responsible for the death of the Thai driver. If they all would have stayed home in Laos, the driver wouldn't have to drive them around and would still be alive.

I'm just wondering, how the heck do you get room for 23 people in a pickup truck?facepalm.gif

songthaew.jpg

Oh, probably something like this:

4 - cab

10 - seats

5 - hanging off the back

5 - standing in the aisle between the seats

Do the math--wait, that's 24--accounts for the driver.
