So the owners of pubs are all bad as well... don't forget alcohol if classed right is a hard drug. Only difference is its legal. I know of plenty of people who took xtc or weed and led a perfectly normal life had a job and so on. Its only a small portion that goes down and becomes a real addict. Kinda like alcohol not everyone becomes an alcoholic.

Drag-user detected.

Nice try to indulge your habit, but we both know you lie to yourself. I've seen many times somebody started to take drugs, saying: I control it, it's just for a recreation.

But the truth is if somebody starts to take hard drugs (xtc, yabba etc) there are just two ways:

1) addicton and death

2) sobering. and every day of taking drugs it becomes harder and harder to stop, but a drug user just keep telling himself (herself): "I control it, I can stop now but I just don't want"

If you take drugs less often you walk in the same direction, but slower.

What self-righteous pontification. You obviously know absolutely nothing about the subject, so I would suggest you don't broadcast that ignorance.

Pssst... khun nisakiman he already has and you just enabled him! You're such an enabler! Oh wait, I did it too! Should we attend EA now? :P

Errrrm... come... again?

I don't oft agree with what robblok says... But he's bang on point about the above... Technically speaking Alcohol is as an addictive drug much the same as Nicotine, Cocaine, Marijuana or Yaba... 2 out of 5 of those drugs are legal in Thailand (for the sake of argument and location) ('ll give you 5 guesses to get the right 2)... That there, my NA preaching ukulele playing friend, is the difference...

I've given most of them a nudge in my youth, still 6 feet the right side and have no craving - you know what I'm talking about the scratching of the skin, gotta scratch the itch - to try them again, yes some great fun experimenting but I'm not out there banging on the door for the next hit.

Would I use these drugs should they ever become legalised, extremely doubtful.

Good to see that we agree on some things.

Anyway here its just not worth it far to dangerous as a foreigner.

Would I use it if legalized.. maybe big advantage for me is that those pills don't add on fat. Big disadvantage is the brain for that you might get the day after, I like to stay clear of mind when I got important work to do.

Thing is if it is legal the quality is good and no fear or paranoia taking it. Would be a lot better, but i think its highly doubtful it will ever become legal anywhere. Though weed is starting to become legal in many places.

Welcome to the lottery of Thai "justice" !w00t.gif

Yeah man <deleted> is that BS.

Ok most ppl would appeal for a lighter sentence so she got her's lengthened but how did the supreme court actually come into the picture here?

Why would they over rule the ruling from the appeals court?

Shows how badly a reform of this system is needed. I mean honestly the prosecutor gets a guilty verdict if 8 years and an appeal increases it to 33?

What an absolute f******g joke.

What I think is BS is that you often see punishments for selling drugs that are higher as those of murder. Bump your farang husband of and be out soon.. Sell some drugs and you never get out.

Alcohol is addictive, yes, i lived with one for many years, and it wreaked havoc on the house. However, many billions of people consume it very regularly with little or no physical damage or signs of addiction. I think we are all grown up here to know that there are levels of addiction associated with different types of drugs, from probably caffeine up to meth.

I think we would probably find that if so called hard drugs were legalised, society would be a pretty wild and wacky place to hang out. The line is drawn at marijuana. A worthwhile debate about whether it should be legal or not, and I, having been a tobacco smoker for many years, reckon, what the hell, if people can smoke tobacco, why not put some damn marijuana in it too. What extra damage can it do beyond the cigarette.

But, yes, I can completely understand the fear of allowing heroine to be legal. The speed with which that can get hold of people and really damage people is very fast.

I am currently recovering from a mild stroke right now due to my drug of choice - nicotine.

2 pk a day for 30+ years = high blood pressure = stroke.

Doctors say I was lucky to recognize onset of sympyoms and had friends react quickly and get me to ER, or it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

But it will still be 4-6 months before I have full use of left arm, hand and leg.

cigarettes are 100% legal, but I'm proof that the effects can be just as devastating as any other drug.

8 years looks about right for that type of crime, 33 was OTT.

Yes, it would have been right, if she would have got out on parole after 4 years, spending the remaining sentence on a licence in the community and recalled if issues arise. Rather pointless locking up people for such a lengthy time, in terms of reforming the convict.

Yup. Smoking sucks. But 30 years of heroine or meth abuse would have caught up with you a hell of a lot quicker I think, and psychologically, the effects probably would have been massively worse than nicotine. Every drug has it's specific effects and results.

Thailand is in desperate need of sentencing guidelines and reviews. The judgements and sentences are all over the place. It can be a very unfunny joke if you are on the wrong end of it.

oh yeah I've heard this story so many times!

"marijuana is not same as hard drugs (means it's a marijuana consumer)"

"ecstasy is not same as hard drugs (means it's an ecstasy consumer)"

"alcohol is more dangerous than amphetamine" (means it's an amphetamine-user)

"smoking meth is not the same as injection" (means this is a meth-smoker)

The system is all over the plave. In this context, governments and the bloody senate and the court system need to get together to come up with sentencing guidelines. The decision making is completely arbitrary and has nothing to do with producing a reasonable outcome of punishment versus crime versus rehab versus safety to society.

These judgements show how utterly corrupt and screwed up the country is.

Some people posting here are fixated on backing all Thai laws, regardless of how foolish some laws are.

Others, like myself, look at each law on its merits or lack thereof.

All drug laws in Thailand are note-for-note similar with US drug laws. In effect, Uncle Sam dictates the Thailand's drug laws. Even to the extent of forcing hemp to be classified as a dangerous drug - even though no one ever got stoned on hemp (it's not possible).

Concurrently, Thailand's most dangerous recreational drug, alcohol, is legal and is also used heavily and often by Thailand's #1 drug enforcement authority, Chalerm. Probably all the judges who sentenced the girl are whiskey guzzlers. There are so many hippocracies, and unfair applications of drug laws in Thailand, it's hard to know where to start on commentaries. A thick book could be written about it, and few outside Thailand would believe what was written, because so much of it is ridiculous and cruel.

Bottom line: The girl should not have gotten so much time behind bars. Is it an 8 years in jail crime for being stupid? If it was your daughter, would you want the same harsh sentence? You'd probably say: "Well, everyone else's daughter, sure. But my daughter, wouldn't do such a thing, so it's not a real question.....blah blah blah" Or you'd say, "No way. My daughter is a good kid. Ok, maybe she made one stupid mistake, but 8 years in a Thai jail for that? Over my dead body."

Hey 8 years during a period when yaa baa was washing all over the country, and there needed to be some effort made to put up a show of having a very serious regieme to punish people who sold it, is in my opinion a so so result. Out after 4 years for good behaviour.

But, 33 years on appeal is a load of <deleted>. If they found the Thai version of the head of the Medellin cartel, how many years would they give them? 3,333?

If Thailand found the Thai version of a Mafia Don heading a drug cartel, they would probably bow at his feet. In Thailand, it doesn't matter how you make your millions, it's only the fact that you're filthy rich, that matters the most.

Does it happen in western countries? If you get your appeal declined do they make your original punishment worse as punishment for wasting the court's time?

In my country we used to have a judge like that he would simply lengthen the sentence if someone he didn't like appealed.

As far as I understand, automatic appeal is not a complete right in most parts or the world, and an increase in sentences is normally only considered if there is an obvious ineptitude on the part of the prosecutor or judge. I.e. there has been a monumental screw up.

In this case, nothing was seen of the sort, and the judge just appeard to have pulled a number out of his ass for a judgement. If it had been the other way around, and someone had got 33 years for 2000 ya ba pills, and the sentence reduced to 8 years on appeal, would anyone have freaked out? Better question, how come she wasn't bailed while pending appeal? Murderers and accused terrorists in Thailand get bail seemingly endlessly.

The sad part is that theres a lot of yaba dealers who are not going to jail because they remember to deliver the 'brown envelopes' to the right people and on time. Yaba is a truly evil substance, I agree with earlier posters about alcohol and cigarettes also being extremely hazardous, but imho yaba and other synth stimulants of this family, is a genuine demon drug. I have friends who smoke and drink, they don't steal money out of my purse or turn up at 4 a.m. drooling and bugeyed like amphetamine users do. I don't hesitate to say yaba dealers should get long sentences, they sell a drug that ruins lives at a vertical rate. The problem in Thailand is more the corruption that surrounds dealing these things, it is not a one-crime-fits-all situation, if you are accepted in the official dealer system locally, you can just pay the brown envelopes to the right authorities and keep dealing. But if you step on the wrong toes or miss an envelope you go to jail. I would sooner see 8-year sentences rather than the 33-year one obviously, but I would see 8-years for all yaba dealers and not just the ones who aren't protected. 8-year sentence is enough of a deterrent. Its better to get the person back into society after 8 years and have them being an asset to the collective, instead of rotting for 33 years.

To be honest I know people who do yabaa actually many of the bar girls also do it. They don't steal money just the ones that get really hooked kinda. The kind of guy your describing is similar to an alcoholic the worst you can get in between there are many who don't have a problem. Just look at it logically, there is so much yabaa here in this country if they all get hooked badly you should see them on every street corner and you don't. What does that tell you, that there is a large percentage of people who can use it without too much problems. Problems come when you use it every day. Its a sliding scale like with any drug.

I am not advocating it here, as for us foreigners and for poor Thais its real bad if you get caught. But the reality is that not everyone that uses it is a street addict or uses it every day.

Bargirls tend to be young, and young people cope with toxic substances better than people in their 30s-50s. Maybe visit those same bargirls when they are 40 and see how they look.

We will have to disagree on the "casual meth user" thing. Meth is highly addictive, promotes starvation and insomnia, acute psychological stress which is the kinetic integer in breakdowns - with all the repercussions of that. I've attended funerals of four meth users, they all had regular jobs to begin with but not towards the end. They were also all relatively young. As a toxic substance it rates far higher than alcohol or cigarettes, although I don't say those things are good for you either. But there is a lot of alcohol drinkers and even smokers who are around into their 80s, my grandfather was 95 and smoked pipe tobacco & drank spirits every evening of his life. I seriously doubt the same can be said for meth users, but we'll have to wait and see.

I agree if you use it all the time that it will kill you in the end or at least age you real fast.

I been to the funeral of some alcoholics does that mean that everyone that drinks alcohol ends up like that ? Not really a good argument. There is too much meth going around and being used for everyone to end up death. If your are right we should see people dropping dead left and right and see users on the street everywhere. We don't so that shows us that there is quite a big group that can use it casually.

As for the my grandfather was bla bla ect ect. We all heard those stories and can counter with many that did die horrible from smoking or alcohol. I am saying that it all depends on how much is used and that is the same with all substances. But the facts are some people are easier addicted then others.

I am in no way saying its all harmless but its also not as bad as it is made out to be. I would not risk drugs here for the risks of deportation. But to be honest I don't fear the effects from casual use I have seen people and myself do that in the past. Do you really think all the coke and stuff is used by addicts.. much of it is used by rich businessmen ect. They don't wreck themselves. Moderation is the key with everything.

Good to see a high profile Thai serve some time for a change, however it won't make much difference in the drug war. There's too much money at stake, and it's too tempting.

it's too tempting. Not to me.I would rather stay poor and free than gamble on getting big money with the risk of losing my freedom.

Not to mention thhe morality of selling drugs. I would rather remain poor and free rather than sell poison that destroys the lives of other.

So the owners of pubs are all bad as well... don't forget alcohol if classed right is a hard drug. Only difference is its legal. I know of plenty of people who took xtc or weed and led a perfectly normal life had a job and so on. Its only a small portion that goes down and becomes a real addict. Kinda like alcohol not everyone becomes an alcoholic.

are you crazy? Taking drugs is a normal life for you??? Join Pornpan!

Like I said in my last post, we will have to disagree on this one. There will be no meeting midway. Meth is famous for being a vertical crash drug, people get messed up on it very fast and I really can't go with the happy casual user thing, sorry. And all the evidence points to it being ferociously addictive.

I think it is fairly obvious that meth screws people up worse than coke does. Coke is also plant-based, a plant that has been chewed by tribes for 1000s of years. Granted it is refined, and harmful, but there seems to be a lot more problems with synthetic chemical stimulants and the human system, than refined plant-based drugs.

Re; smoking and drinking, again, I never said they are good for you. Grandfather blah blah blah nothing, man. I was pointing out that people do smoke and drink (both plant-based drugs btw) every single day of their lives and pass away peacefully in their 90s. My point is that you wont see daily meth users in their 90s. In my humble opinion. I was born with seizure-M.S. so I only take blanket-anticonvulsants. I don't do any other drugs at all, legal or otherwise, but I put my black veil on and go watch meth-using acquaintances get laid to rest.

Granted it is refined, and harmful, but there seems to be a lot more probelms with synthetic chemical drugs and the human system, than refined plant-based drugs.

Like i said before doing it every day will kill you.. But drinking loads of alcohol every day will kill you too (probably a bit slower) I was not talking about the real addicts. I am still talking casual users and there must be many else everyone who ever used a pill ends up dead according to your logic.

Anyway I am quite healthy now no drugs workout a lot am in great shape, watch my food eat healthy not overweight like so many here I just have my views on drugs and they are unconventional. Though logic shows me to be right most users of those drugs never end up dead they just moderate their use or stop after a while. If you look at the amount of drugs its impossible that everyone that uses or has ever used ends up dead. (ok we all end up dead but you know what i mean)

But facts are facts.. here you get arrested for it and if you like me like it here and have a home and possessions you don't want to get deported for it. So you just don't, plus it would play havoc on my training at the moment. Only good thing is the appetite suppressant of it. Wish they could separate it it would cure obesity.

ignoramus detected. quit pretending you have an inside track on something you know nothing about.

and ecstacy and yaba should not be discussed in the same breath

oh yeah I've heard this story so many times!

"marijuana is not same as hard drugs (means it's a marijuana consumer)"

"ecstasy is not same as hard drugs (means it's an ecstasy consumer)"

"alcohol is more dangerous than amphetamine" (means it's an amphetamine-user)

"smoking meth is not the same as injection" (means this is a meth-smoker)

don't lie to yourself

Oh serenade me again you ukulele playing songstress of wisdom...

Heh! This guy doesn't know when to stop digging, does he?

JJJJJJJJJtttttttttttttt whatever your name is, (sticky keyboard matey? You should cut down on the porn...), your self-righteous smugness is only exceeded by your ignorance. When you join a thread discussing a subject, it really does help to have some knowledge, if only very basic, about that subject.

let me guess.. you also think that : "marijuana is much less harmful than alcohol, it was banned because of the conspiracy of Illuminati in US government, tobacco and alcohol manufacturers"

lol

I know hundreds of stories like that which people created to indulge themselves.

If you smoke pot, be brave to confess yourself - you are a drug user

When talking with conventional people (who also happen to be people who haven't experimented with drugs other than alcohol, and possibly pot), they will usually say 'alcohol is ok, and so it pot, when done in moderation.' Conversely, if any other recreational drug is mentioned, they immediately revert to worst-case scenario stories, because that's all they've been fed.

There can be moderate users of recreational drugs (other than alcohol), but regular folks can't perceive that, because they've only seen/heard about worst abuses.

I'm not excusing any sorts of excesses, neither sex-addiction, nor addictions to ciggs, coffee, caffeine drinks or sugar (Yes, Nat'l Geographic mag recently stated "Sugar is an addictive substance").

Each drug case should be looked at for its realistic implications. The girl should not have been given such a long time behind bars, particularly not for 1st offense. Some punishment, ok, perhaps 6 months jail and/or a fine and some community service.

Thailand is so often ass-backwards when it comes to sentencing. A U professor who murdered his wife in a jealous rage was sentenced to giving lectures on 'ethics'! A doctor who murdered his wife was let off because 'he represents an esteemed profession.' A cop shooting son of a rich man was given no sentence, even though he ran from the law for months, but instead was assigned to teaching cops how to shoot. Thai justice is like a very badly written script for a 3rd rate comedy.

I like your remark about the fact that if any other recreational drug is mentioned that people who have never tried it automatically go to the worst case scenario. It is so true, people who never tried anything seem to believe that all drug users end up dead and as street addicts.

This is just not the case because if you look at the sheer volume of drugs, then the group of street addicts would have been so much bigger and everything should be so much more visible and it is not. So a lot of people seem to be able to use the drugs and lead a normal / semi normal life.

Mind you as you I agree that drugs are bad for your health all drugs alcohol included.
