STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (BNO NEWS) -- Canadian author Alice Munro, considered to be one of the world's best short story writers, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday. She is the 13th woman and the first Canadian-based writer to win the literature prize.

Munro, 82, was awarded the honorable prize by the Swedish Academy and described as a "master of the contemporary short story." She had been a favorite for bookmakers, with Ladbrokes in London giving her 4:1 odds of winning, just below its 5:2 rating for Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.
