Credit Card Pin Bypass Bangkok etc.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been having a few issues with UK chip and pin cards declined at merchants who have chip terminals in Thailand. I've noticed a lot of merchants (Especially Tesco) will just press PIN bypass rather than letting the customer enter their PIN but from what I've found all that happens is UK issuers just decline the transaction straight away as they assume its fraud. Apparently Visa, MasterCard and Amex advise all UK issuers (And some issuers from other countries) to auto decline these transactions. I'm getting this with N&P and another credit card company. Has anyone here got a UK card that doesn't seem to auto decline these Pin Bypass chip transactions? It's almost impossible to try and get shops to let me enter my PIN. The cards work just fine at swipe and sign merchants but in Bangkok and Pattaya they seem to be dwindling.

have you tried telling the seller not to bypass the pin?

Yes, I normally get a blank stare or they do it so quickly it already declines and they won't try it again

Some places will let me enter the PIN though.
