Singapore cancels ban on Thai chicken

BANGKOK, 24 October 2013 (NNT) – Singapore, after 9 years, has decided to lift the ban of Thai chicken imports allowing Thai frozen chicken into the country once again.

Speaking after a meeting under the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship (STEER), Commerce Minister Niwatthumrong Boonsongpaisan said Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang has decided to lift the suspension of Thai chicken, after banning it 9 years ago due to the bird-flu outbreak.

Minister Niwatthumrong said Singapore is a potential market for Thailand as it imports 250 million US dollars worth of frozen chicken a year.

Minister Niwatthumrong also asked Singapore to consider importing Thai frozen pork as well as investing in swine feeding business in Thailand.

Meanwhile, his Singaporean counterpart Lim Hng Kiang told him that Singapore was interested in getting its hands on Thailand’s mega development projects as Singapore is expertise in both the basic infrastructure and the water management.
