webfact
Fish die from canal pollution after Phuket SuperCheap fireKhemin WicheetthagoonPHUKET: -- Around 200 fish have been found dead after pollution runoff flowed into a canal behind the razed SuperCheap fire site, but authorities say the health hazard situation is under control.Dechakanee Leranon from the Rassada Municipality, which is currently monitoring the site for any health problems, told The Phuket News that 200 fish had died from pollution in the canal. The pollution was under control and there were were several main reasons for it, he said. The bad smell coming from the site was mostly coming from the burnt goods – including 430 tonnes of spoiled fresh fruit and produce, meat and seafood, and toxic chemicals such as insecticide and chemicals that had been burnt in the fire, he said.SuperCheap now have control of the site back from the forensic scientists, and the cleanup is due to begin. To help reduce the smell on the site, Mr Dechakanee said staff at the Municipality would use lime (calcium hydroxide) mixed with water to spray around the burnt building, which would hopefully reduce the smell.Authorities also plan to use Effective Micro-organisms (EM) balls to reduce water pollutants and improve the water quality in the canal and also in pools of stagnant water at the SuperCheap site. These EM balls were used extensively during the Bangkok floods of 2011. One EM ball can disinfect four cubic metres of polluted water. Old Croc
Not a surprising side effect from such a huge fire and with the amount of toxins of all sorts that were destroyed. Hope they do the right thing with the clean-up. After, luckily, no casualties from the fire, it would be very unfortunate if some misguided people died from eating poisoned fish. shawndoc
Frankly I'd be surprised if they didn't hire a couple of bulldozers and push all the debris into the river. Site clear!
