So I've a 60 day double entry tourist visa I got in Laos. Need to exit in 2 weeks, I'm in Chiang Mai.

I believe the handiest is a bus trip to Burma.

Can I travel in Burma... I heard that the overland crossing, you're not allowed... but that was a while ago... if I can, is it visa on arrival for Burma? Or I need to get it here first?

Cheers

You can do it by crossing at Mai Sai without any problem. Cost of entry to Burma is $10 or 500 baht.

Ok, cool, but is not for the burmese visa, right?

Myanamr immigration at Tachilk has brochures showing opportunities to coninue Northwards to Kwentung, howver due to the dangers I will not drive out of town.

I believe anyone entitled who wished to can stay up to a limited number of days in town (last heard 10 ) by an American whose wife is from Tachilek I met in person in Mae Sai.People do drive further north but you must hir local driver also no current means to wander off to Manadlay Inle etc nor to exit from another border like Mae Sodt.I am waiting for this to change.

It is squalid, shabby and extremely unattractive place and I don't think I would stay unless they paid me top $ while my Thai partner would not consider it any price.

You may wish to contact here for up to to date requirements .Obviously in a flux situation the regimes views may alter .Also you do not state your nationality. This may help, good luck,xx

It's well worth it to spend a night in Burma just across the border from Mae Sai. I have done it several times. Once you get a few hundred meters from the border crossing you realize it is an interesting town. One night is enough though. Burmese immigration will want to know where you are sleeping that night, so have a hotel or guesthouse name handy. There are a few at the bottom of the hill from the temple. I suggest you stay there. It's about a 20-25 minute walk from the border to that part of town. Rides are cheap if you don't want to walk.
