To apply for a non immm o visa (as a gaurdian to

my child studying in

thailand) my embassy in south africa requires a list

of things, one of

them being a bank statement from my local bank

showing the equivilent

of100 000 baht..thats easy.

However once I get this visa, I have to have it

renewed every 90 days

at immigration office in my town in thailand...that

is not a

problem...however I recently read that In Thailand

I have to show a

bank acc with 800 000 baht that has been

untouched for three

months..is this correct? if so do I have to show it

once?? or every

three months?? or not at all because I already got

my o visa sorted

out in my own country..very confused..

For study in Thailand you present a bank account with 500k balance for 30 days first year and 3 months following years and receive a normal one year extension of stay. If you do not leave Thailand you have to report your address every 90 days as everyone else but it is yearly extensions.

(1) The alien must have been granted a non-immigrant visa (NON-IM). (2) The alien must have proof of relationship. (3) In the case of spouse, the relationship must be de jure and de facto; or (4) In the case of children, adopted children, or spouses children, said children, adopted children, and spouses children must not be married, must live with the alien as part of the family, and must not be over 20 years of age; or (5) In the case of parents, funds must be deposited in a bank in Thailand, under the fathers or the mothers name, of no less than Baht 500,000 for the past three months. For the first year only, the applicant must have proof of a deposit account in which said amount of funds has been maintained for no less than 30 days prior to the filing date.

As L3 said already.

I have been told that a foreigner without a work permit is not allowed to have a bank acc. In thailand...so this information must be incorrect..Is it legal to open an account then?

Anyone can open a bank account in Thailand. It is just that some branch manager make local rules for opening a bank account at their branch. Some bank branches require a Non-O visa whilst other will open an account with a tourist visa. If you have a Non-O visa most banks will allow you to open an account with no problem.

That is a local Consulate issue and varies. In most cases nothing more than the normal 20k baht for a non immigrant visa would be asked; if even asked.
