I have a couple of small Excel files in Google Drive on my desktop PC so that I can access them on my iPad using the Cloud On app (at least I think the two are related for that purpose). Anyway it's a convenience, but something I could easily live without and something I don't use that often.

But checking the Windows Task Manager - Processes on my desktop computer, it seems that Googledrivesync.exe is using a boatload of memory. Is there any simple way of reducing this or, if not, is there a simple way to just ditch the whole thing without causing collateral mayhem ... heavy emphasis on "simple."

Thanks.

Yes, you can uninstall it.

1. Launch Google Drive
2. Right click the Google Drive icon on the Taskbar and select PREFERENCES

3. Click Disconnect Account and then click Yes to verify

once you see the verification dialog, click OK.

4. Now you can go into Control Panel >> Programs and Features and uninstall Google Drive.

Google Drive Sync is a 3rd-party desktop application created by Google that automates the upload, download and synchronization of files in your My Drive google cloud account. If you don't need or use the constant synchronization feature then you don't need it installed on your computer.

It didn't seem there was anything to launch. Anything labeled Google Drive just opened the folder with that name and nothing pinned to the taskbar. I checked on the control panel and there's no program listed. Right clicking on anything to do with Google Drive didn't bring up a preference option.

So I saved the Excel files to a documents folder. Removed everything from the Google Drive folder. Opened the Task Manager Processes and found the GoogleDriveSynch.exe, and clicked "end process."

Looked through the program files and found GoogleDriveSync application, but again no option found for "preferences" and launching it did nothing noticeable other than to make it reappear in the task manager processes.

Since I've emptied the Google Drive folder and won't save anything more to it, maybe the Google Sync function won't start up.

Google searches for this topic do bring up a number of complaints of memory hogging, but I didn't see any solutions on offer aside from the hope that Google would do something about the problem.

So maybe what I've done will suppress the problem if not actually solve it.

Interesting.

Temporarily installed on my Windows7/32 PC to check. Had two GoogleDriveSync processes running, and the Google Drive app (recycle looking logo) in the task tray. I was able to disconnect and then did an uninstall, no issues.

The instructions from the website I referenced previously also mentioned downloading and using a separate 'cleaner' application that could be used to remove the application and any registry keys left behind. Since you didn't find the app icon in the system tray, your install may be corrupted. The mentioned 'cleaner' program, or another favorite 'uninstaller' app, like CCleaner, could be used to initiate an uninstall.

You could also run msconfig and see what's listed under the Services or Startup tabs.

Last case scenario, clean re-install and then uninstall. Download and re-install the Google Drive app then Disconnect and Uninstall it.

OK, just noticed that the GoogleDriveSync uninstaller left registrykeys and entries in startup behind. I used CCleaner to locate and remove/delete the items, even though the executable files had already been removed. Bad Google, Bad!

Found it in Startups and unclicked it there. Will see if it remains dormant if I don't poke it anymore. I did recently run SpyBot and something that allegedly cleans up registry errors. Maybe they managed to mangle something.

Thanks again.

Jeez! Considering that the GoogleDrive experience comes from the Big-Boys, you'd expect something that was perhaps slightly user friendly and with a reasonable interface.

Yuk! It reminds me of the crap I programmed in DOS around 40? years ago - and which didn't work too well, either...laugh.png

I tried GD for a couple of days, too - mostly had the same probs as you guys. Gave up in the end, uninstalled the useless crap and now use Dropbox for the real important stuff - and Mediafire (12Gigs free!) for the rest.

Dropbox is by far the best - Mediafire is slightly weird, but at least better'n GD.

My 2 cents, baht, rupees or whatever....
