No, he is quite correct.

In fact, it was an Untersee Boat, based in Ireland, that enabled the only successful POW escape from England in WW2.

I think Ireland, along with the UK, should be towed about 1,500 kms south and moored off in the med.

Would you go with them?

I hate the place anto lol. I'll check it out David

Abstence makes the heart grow fonder .I used hate the place also but after a few years away i begin to remember the good parts .
Slight spelling error ?

Yes, he meant to write abstinence makes the heart grow fonder!

Alcohol also helps.

He is in the minority, I am Irish and have lived all over the world. Every german I have met loves the Irish, his name shows he is English...GBK

That may be the case, but cherry picking historical moments to justify negative comments is a game we all can play, and I would imagine your homeland ( which i doubt very much is Germany) has more unsavoury stories to be told than the Emerald Isle ever had !

there were no u boat pens in Ireland, as a matter of fact, all Germans who set foot in Ireland were interned until the end of WW2, Dublin was bombed by the Germans.

Total and utter rubbish, go back to school

Hardy cherry picking. Merely a fact. No pens, but many fjords.

Dublin was bombed on one occasion ( in Sandymount ,a suburb of Dublin City ) .It was a mistake though and the plane was really heading for Belfast .

The Germans had specially built U boat stations along the French coast .They certainly had no places for U boats to dock in Ireland .They could have stationed themselves just off the Irish coast for a few hours ,but what could the Irish Government do about that ?.

Except that the place is full of Paddys.

I like Paddys, although Tulamore Dew is also acceptable ! rolleyes.gif

Ireland, one of the great places to travel if you are on your own. Was going with a couple of friends 2 years ago but they had to pull out due to health problems. Decided to go alone to Southern Ireland and I had a ball. I am not a very big fella and started out I could only drink 2 pints of Guinness a night, after 10 days I could drink 6.

I really enjoyed Dublin but Donegal was a special favourite of mine.

Great scenery, excellent accommodation, roads a bit so so but the VW Golf that I hired managed it ok.

No-one ever got upset when I drove down a one-way street the wrong way and the people in the pubs were all up for a chat.

The caretaker at an ancient monument even got out his curling stick to give me a bit of a demo.

I also was impressed with the bit of string that was strung across the entrance to an old castle. It had a "no entry" sign attached but I followed tradition and lifted it up to gain entry.

Thinking about my next trip.

Would you go with them?

I would not, as I live in Thailand.

>>curling stick << ? You must mean Hurling stick .

Why do people go on about Guinness all the time?

Speaking as an Englishman who has visited the Republic on several occasions; both Murphy's and Beamish are much better.

Sadly, both seem difficult to find outside the Republic.

It's always been my dream to drink with a bunch of locals in a pub in Dublin

Ireland is one of my favourite countries in the world. First place I went to when I could finally afford a trip from Canada (US doesn't count). Brilliant music, beautiful countryside, great whisky and beer, and very warm people. Always wished I had some Irish in my DNA. Just found out this year (when I got my DNA sequenced) that I likely have a smidgen... but just that.

i believe it is possible to get Irish whiskey at most pubs throughout the planet these days. its exactly the same as had on the emerald isle :)

Not all whiskeys or whiskys are born alike... there's more than Jameson's, and in some corners of the planet, even that's not widely available.

There is also a small pub chain in Dublin ( one branch in Londons Convent Garden ) called "The Porter House " ,who brew their own beer .They do a stout called "a pint of Plain " which is quite good .

Thanks, I'll have a look next time I'm in town.

As proven in WW2 by the u boat pens in S Ireland.

Myth.

It is probably attributed to the 'fact', an English spy in a Kerry bar noticed some guy's speaking a foreign language dressed in dark uniforms.

They happened to be Danish sailors.

But if you have any better proof, please provide, or else I could have fun all night at the stupidity of individuals, ...........

I very much doubt if GBK is German .99% of the Germans i met ,who have been to Ireland love Ireland and the Irish .The Irish have a soft spot for and most admire the Germans .[/quot

Not sure about U boat pens but the Republic of Ireland was neutral during WW2 .( they really had no other choice though ) .Many men from the South did join the British Army during the war .

U- Boat pens in Ireland were non-existent, unless anyone can prove me different. Yes they were neutral, but they did have a choice, however as a new nation, they were still finding their legs, so to speak, and in reality they were providing a buffer to the beleaguered UK, Germany could not invade Ireland, and possibly upset the neutral U.S, and so the western borders of the Uk were protected.

as the Lusitania caused reasons for the US to enter WW1. Invasion of Ireland would have probably resulted in the same. ( obviously meaning WW11 )

And yes Irish men did fight for the Allies.

Yes.there were German submarines docked in Ireland during WW2 which proves Ireland was not neutral during WW2. They were on the side of the Germans. They cannot be neutral anymore now they are in the European Union. They cannot receive all the financial benifits and hand-outs then when anything nasty like a war starts claim they are neutral.

Link Please?

They were on the side of the Germans.

Oh dear!!

They cannot be neutral anymore now they are in the European Union

Yes they can, and they have been involved in most wars that were not illegal, like the Balkan charade.

All these posts using"fuzzy talk" to hide the facts. I repeat ,Ireland was neutral during WW2 and as George Bush says,"If you arent with us you are against us".

Small wonder Germans like the Irish .The Irish wouldnt fight them. They had an easy ride.

Now that we have let the Irish become members of the European Union for them to get massive amounts of aid and benefits surely they cannot claim to be neutral if something nasty comes along. If they do they should be kicked out of the EEC.

Please dont answer with "fuzzy talk" like the potato famine and Roger Casement etc.etc.etc.......................

There are good and bad things about anywhere you go. The truth is that the only thing stopping you from enjoying where you are is yourself. Why is it that middle aged farang men feel so strong and powerful and alive in Thailand but feel so insecure and emasculated in first world countries?

This is where Ireland shamed itself though at the time ,

>>The President Douglas Hyde ,along with the then PM. Eamon De Valera offered condolences to Nazi Germanys repesentative in Dublin ,the day after they learned of the death of Hitler <<
