AMNESTY BILL
Private sector seeks Senate's cooperation

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- At 3pm, the country's largest private sector organisations will submit a letter to the Senate, to convince senators not to pass the amnesty bill.

Pramon Sutivong, chairman of the Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand (ACT), said that they would continue protesting the bill, even if the Senate endorses it and the case is forwarded to the Constitutional Court.

Pramon revealed that after a meeting with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking today. The committee is the biggest grouping of private businesses, consisting of the FTI, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Thai Bankers Association.

"After the discussion, each organisation will officially announce its stance on this. Today, the private sector and academics’ move is not politically driven, but this is the right thing to do as we see that this would lead to a crisis," he said.

Earlier, the ACT issued a statement to oppose the bill, saying that it is against the UN Convention on Corruption.

The House last week approved the bill in a speed. Senate deliberation is scheduled for this week.

Kittiratt: Protests might hurt Q4 economy

BANGKOK, 4 November 2013 (NNT) - Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong has expressed concerns over effects of protests on the economy in the fourth quarter especially on tourism while urging relevant units to explain the situation to foreign countries for a positive image of Thailand.

Mr Kittiratt said the ongoing political protests in Bangkok would show the overall Thai tourism in a bad light and might trouble people whose businesses were related to tourism. He added that he hoped all sides would talk with one another to find solutions to their political conflicts and called on the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to communicate constructive information to foreign countries.

The minister stressed that the government’s budget disbursement and investment must be effective since they could stimulate the country’s GDP growth. More than 750 billion baht of the state budget was expected to be allocated during the last quarter of 2013, he said.
