Not sure if this one has been asked before - but here goes -

As my fiancee didn't get her visa to come to the UK :o and she has a nice new passport so I thought I would take her somewhere so she can use it.

What I would like to know is

1) Where are the best places to go - with Visa on arrival type arrangements for Thais

2) where have you taken your other half and they liked? i.e. did you take them to Penang and they hated it for example

I understand that it is easy to go to ASEAN countries - but was not sure if Malaysia / Singapore etc are turn up and let you in sorts of places or you have to make sure you have right paperwork, money, return tickets etc.

Do I need to make sure that she has money on her in case of entry officer in the country decides to ask her how she is going to take care of herself - she could just point at the big farang and tell them he is paying for everything?

I was considering taking her to Dubai - as I know a few people in the know there and could get a visa but I am thinking that 6.5 hour flight there and back on top of my 14 hour return from Europe all in under a month was asking for trouble. :D

I know this sort of information is available on the relevant embassies pages etc - but I am looking for other people experiences and things to watch out for that aren't mentioned on the relevant embassy website.

I previously needed this info and was advised to Google " thai citizen - what countries can visit without visa before travel" also lots of info on Thai Visa;

I have taken my Gf to Hong Kong and Singapore - entry to both was without Visa and very easy - she enjoyed both trips albeit my wallet was given a hammering with the obligatory shopping;

Sorry to hear you couldnt get a UK visa :o - better luck next time

Thanks johnb. :D

Yeah one of the places she did mention was Singapore, and yes I reckon she could get to the olympics if shopping was an olympic event (shame it isn't as that would have been a good way for her to come visit me in England for the 2012 olymics :D ). Thing is I am looking at waisting about 10 days so Singapore I've been told is ok for a few days but quickly gets boring. So any further suggestions would be most welcome. At least I know they aren't funny about Thai's in Singapore - last thing I wanted to do was buy the tickets and get stopped getting into the country.

I did assume that some of the board members would be heartless enough to tell me to go use Google, but if everyone did that we wouldn't have a nice board to play in. :o

The Visa thing is still a work in progress - have the appeal in July - which I must say was a big surprise as it only took 7 months from sending off the appeal - and I was told 12 months minimum at the outset.

Singapore, HK, Malaysia no problem, we have been there many times. Only advice I would give is to go up to immigration counter together and you give both passports to officer. He/she will likely ask "you together?" and an nicely voiced affirmative will get her 30 days in Malaysia and HK, Singapore will often ask how long you are staying and stamp for that time. Never been asked for money or return tickets unless she travels alone.

I knew I would get one plonka that tried to be clever and post a google reference. I am more than capable of using Google myself, but what google does not include is people opinions and experiences which is my main interest in posting.

This does not however answer my questions - I am fully aware of such lists and that the relevant visa information can be obtained from the relevant countries.

What these lists and the official sites do not tell you is the ease with which you can pass through immigration in such countries, if there is a requirement to show onward travel arrangements for example this does sometimes get asked for in my experience even though the country in question does not say so on their immigration website.

And this goes nowhere in answering how the trip was receieved by the Thai spouse.

And I am sure if I took my girlfriend to Russia - I would never hear the end of it - bad enough with the AC being on in the hotel!

Hi Lamonster,

It really is no problem going to various countries in Asia these days.

As long as she does not wear any sleazy clothes you should be fine.

It really depends what kind of holiday you want.

Are you looking for relaxing on the beach, snorkling ore some more cultural things?

For clubbing Singapore would be OK but just a day ore two and do not go to Orchard road as

you will have serious cash flow problems after a few hours of shopping.

China is also a nice place to go (e.g. Hainan) ore Vietnam?

I am travelling/working throughout Asia and know of lots of places depending what you looking for.

So let us know and maybe we can give some advice.

Oh by the way it is best if your GF gives the passports to immigration officer.

Kind regards,

Alex

AlexLah! That's more like what I was looking for - positive and helpfull. :D

Singapore sounds like a winner all round for a few days at least - what's the legal age for drinking in Singapore (she's 20 fyi), and is that same for the Clubs (I assume that passport would be relevant proof of ID) any suggestions which clubs? and which area are they in.

I would have liked to go to China myself - but I was kind of under the impression would mean going to the embassy before hand to get Visas, same reason why I wouldn't take her to Japan - which is on the top of my list to visit but am under the impression that getting a visa for her to go their would be a lot of effort i.e. trip to BKK lots of paperwork? Having thought about it if anyone has done Japan with their Thai spouse I would be interested to know how much of a problem it was if at all (other than me gawping at all the Japenese women and getting knee capped by my gf :o )

I guess what I am looking for is 10 days with 50/50 beach and city combo - don't mind if I have to get a plane to another country to get the change - but the less hassle I have with relevant paperwork the better.
