From tourist visa to retirement - please advise

Featured Replies

Greetings all,

Grateful if you could give me some advice on the following visa issues. I am a British passport holder with a double entry tourist visa. My first entry is expiring on 2 december and I want to extend it on the basis of retirement. I will be losing the second entry but don't mind. So my first question, are there any problems with not using the second entry? Second, How early should apply for this extension?

Just to double check with you the docs I need to submit: passport, 3 copies of the application form (do I need TM 86 or TM7?), 3 photos, one medical certificate, proof of address, and bank statements to show I have enough funds. Anything else?

I also have a couple of questios re bank statements. As i have the required amount in two separate banks, one in Thai baht and the other in GBP, do I need to get the bank to say what the equivalent in Thai baht is? I understand immigration in chaeng wattana requires statements dated the same day of the application. I am not likely to get both letters because one bank does not have a branch in Chaeng wattana and the other bank may not be able to give me a statement that shows the equivalent amount in Thai baht. Do you think this can be a problem or am I worrying to much?? What would you suggest I do in this case?

If all goes well, I will get a one year extension based on retirement renewable if I meet all the requirements. I will be required to report to immigration every three months, right? If I leave the country, will I need to apply for re-entry permits? Do I apply in Chaeng wattana or at the airport?

Thanks you very much for your usual kind help and advice and have a pleasant evening.

You apply at Chiang Watanna and do not believe they will require a medical. They can do conversion rate for foreign funds. If you have had funds in account 2 months you can have a TM.7 ready but most recent reports are that first you do the conversion and then 60 days later the actual extension. You need to have 15 days or more remaining on current stay so do this week or you may have to extend the tourist visa or make a new entry. Extra tourist visa should not be an issue.

You want to convert and for that you will need proof that the money came from abroad! That the money is in a foreign currency is no problem, as long as the value is at least 800,000 baht.

It doesn't matter that you don't use the other tourist visa entry.

You need to report your address every 90 days (not 3 months)

Before you leave you need a re-entry permit, from CW-road or at the airport.

Thanks for this. Just to clarify the point about conversion. I have had the foreign currency funds for a couple of years already. And so you're saying immigration would do the currency conversion? If the recents reports are accurate, what do I need to convert the tourist visa to retirement? Same documents as outlined in my message but Which application form do I use, for eg? What do I need to submit for the actual extension? Apologies if I am asking more questions, but I early want to make sure I have the paperwork and process in order before going to apply. Many thanks!

Thanks very much Mario. So there is no issue with the dates of the statements I will get from the banks? Now that i know I don't have to get the bank to do the currency conversion, I can get a copy on the day I apply at CW road. But with the other bank that doesn't have a branch there, the date on their letter will be a few days earlier. Pls advise.

Also, will I have to submit any paper spay a fee to get a re-entry permit?

Many thanks again.

For the conversion you simply fill out a form and submit all required documents and copies thereof.

There are 2 conversion forms, one from a visa exempt entry and one from a tourist visa entry. You need the last one.

tm86 Print double sided, not two separate pages. (if two pages)

The TM.86 for change of visa to non immigrant 90 day entry. Photo and fill out the form and have proof of address and funds in Thailand and foreign origin. If the required 800k has been in account then might allow extension at same time but believe they will tell you to return 2 months later with basically same paperwork and TM.7 form for that. Conversion costs 2k and extension 1.9k. Re-entry permits are only needed if you travel during the 90 day visa entry or during your extensions of stay and are only valid for the current permitted to stay date in your passport. They cost 1,000 baht or 3,800 multi entry.

Thanks again. The TM86 in the link does not specify whether it's from tourist visa or visa exempt. where can I find the right application form?

TM 86 is the right form. it converts from a visa (tourist visa) to a non-immigrant visa.

You want to change visa and that is TM.86

If you have visa exempt you would need a visa and that is TM.87

Easy the TM86 is for a change of visa status if you have a visa exempt entry you do not have a visa to change and you use the TM87 to apply for a non immigrant visa.

Thank you all very much for your help. It is much appreciated.

Where does one get the ™ 86? From Immigration officials directly? I am in a very similar situation having turned 50 yesterday, but I still need to transfer the 800,000 baht from my home country to Thailand.

You can do that or download from pinned topics at top of forum or from immigration web sites. When printing forms be sure to print two sides of one A4 size paper if they are two pages.
