Kennedy, was sworn in Tuesday as the new US ambassador to Japan.Kennedy took the ambassador's oath at a ceremony led by US Secretary of State John Kerry at the State Department nearly 50 years to the day of her father was fatally shot in Dallas, Texas.During her confirmation hearing in the US Senate, Kennedy said she "was humbled to be following in the footsteps of some strong people" who previously served as US ambassador to Japan. Among them are the John F Kennedy Library Foundation, the Institute of Politics at Harvard University and the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.Kennedy, who holds a law degree from Columbia Law School, is the most famous living member of the Kenndy family. In continuing the political tradition of the Kennedy clan, she has been a strong supporter of President Barack Obama, a Democrat.She has never made a serious bid to hold elected office. Jimmy carter named Shirley Temple Black as ambassador to Ghana, and she arrived in that country wearing one of those colonial pith hats that the English colonizers used to wear.
