Traffic jam at multi-storeyed flyover towards Pattaya

Featured Replies

It's kind of scary everytime I sat on a Roong Reung coach heading to Pattaya. Whenever the traffic condition hit a snag and came to a stand still along one of those sky high expressways, I would be wondering if the flyovers could withstand the combined weight of so many buses and trucks at the same time.

In theory

Yes.

However given the high standards of local building, you may want to check your travel insurance.

No. Elevated highways worldwide are only designed to handle the weight of normally moving traffic, not gridlocked traffic.

That is why the media all over the world is full of stories every day about elevated, multi-lane highways collapsing due to the weight of the traffic jams on the top, killing lots of worried bus passengers.

When it rains, they are even heavier and even more dangerous. I would suggest just staying at home.

If thats all you have to worry about ,dont.

I became worried because my coach which was fully loaded decided to sneak along the side bay reserved for breakdown vehicles. Not long after, the rest of the heavy vehicles decided to follow.

My limited physics knowledge tells me if more vehicles are stacked at the edge of the elevated highways, the more uneven the distribution of weight on the Y-shaped pillars supporting the runway.

I think that's what happened to the sinking ship in Pattaya recently. There was a sudden rush to the upper deck of the ship which caused the latter to topple.

Possible, let's see :-)
