Three Cambodian poachers killed in shoot-out with park rangers

Phanom Dongrak wildlife reserve rangers yesterday shot and killed three Cambodian poachers in a shoot-out near the Thai-Cambodian border in Kantharalak district.

Park officials that a team of park rangers were patrolling the wildlife reserve in Tambon Lalai when a number of armed poachers was spotted inside the Thai border.

They opened fire first, prompting the rangers to return fire. In a brief shoot-out three poachers were shot dead and the rest fleeing back to Cambodian border. A search near the scene of shooting produced several planks of the protected Siamese rosewood or commonly known as Phayoong.

Park officials said the rare and protected Phayoong logs could fetch up to 10 million baht if they were smuggled out of the forest for sale out of the country.

Officials said they also seized several handsaws, axes and head torches at the scene.

Police were informed of the shooting and all the dead bodies were sent to local hospital for autopsy.

Unfortunately its a war zone on the borders of Thailand and Cambodia for this reason.

They are full time employees of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Conservation Department. Do not envy their jobs but the wife and I know quite a few and classify them as our friends.
