Northern police warn World Cup bookmakers

CHIANG MAI: -- Police in Thailand's eight upper northern provinces will keep watchful eyes on betting during this year's World Cup football matches which will kick off next month.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Panupong Singhara Na Ayutthaya, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5, said on Friday that he had ordered chiefs at 152 police stations in the eight upper northern provinces to closely monitor illegal betting activities during the upcoming World Cup, especially those previously identified bookmakers who have not changed their habits.

He also instructed police not to seek kickbacks from betting, and warned that severe disciplinary action would be taken against officers cooperating with bookmakers.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Panupong conceded that it is a difficult task as betting is also conducted by telephone and on the Internet.

SUSPECTED Islamic militants killed two Buddhists and injured seven people, including two soldiers, in separate attacks in Thailand's restive south, police said Tuesday.

Gunmen opened fire at sanitation workers in Pattani, one of three insurgency-plagued southern provinces, late yesterday, killing Meelarb Boonrung, 37, and Prasit Kongchoo, 33, and injuring five others, they said.

At the crime scene, the militants left Thai-language leaflets demanding independence for the region from Thailand, police said.

The region was an independent sultanate until Thailand annexed it a century ago. Separatist violence has simmered ever since.

While Thailand is mainly Buddhist, most people in the Muslim-majority south are ethnic Malays and many believe Thailand discriminates against them because they are Muslims.

Separately in Pattani, a roadside bomb exploded late yesterday, injuring two soldiers who was patrolling the area in a vehicle.

A two-year insurgency has left more than 1200 people dead in the kingdom's southern provinces on the border with Malaysia.
