Having read this link & then finding myself @ midnight shadowing a huge cement mixer with no rearward lights whatsoever between Lamai & Chaweng rendering it completely invisible it occurred to me that the authorities would improve road safety significantly if they implemented compulsory checks of documents & serviceability-light checks to be videoed in case of accident- on all incoming ferry traffic as a pre requisite for boarding the boat.

OK - put that one on the 'to do' list along with speed checks, licence checks, driving on the wrong side of the road checks, parking on the wrong side of the road checks, little children on motorbikes checks, entire families on motorbikes checks, 50 foot bamboo poles carried between 2 motorbikes checks, turning without indicating checks, stopping with no brake-lights checks, not giving way to traffic from the right at roundabouts checks and total bans and 10,000 baht spot fines on anything using loudspeakers.

In all seriousness - you are not alone in this. The root of the problem is that nobody here on Samui has been taught how to drive. They can find out for themselves how to operate their vehicles, sure. But road sense, reading the road, vehicle positioning, awareness of distances and speeds, looking around and using mirrors, how to overtake and when not to, plus a hundred other things, are not coded into our genes - they need to be taught and learned.

But anyway, until the role of the police force involves actual policing instead of the governmental equivalent of waiters in a restaurant, these insane daily instances of disregard for public safety will continue, I'm sad to say.

I do think it would be possible though to provide some kind of flashing warning light at night to warn drivers/riders of a open drain as opposed to something the equivalent of a toothpick.

Also, why are government vehicles, such as garbage trucks driving around without lights? Is it too much to ask for them to set some type of an example?

Actually I see them almost every day at my place.

My place daily too. They sign the book, chat to the security guard and say hello when they see me - very polite

Yes, you guys are right, they actually do come, but I am never there....only on 'payday' they come in for a non-alcoholic drink while the wife prepares the envelope....and yes, they are nice.

Bringing the thread back on track; A 1m x 3m section of road has collapsed immediately after the ghost rd crossroads on the left when heading from Bandon towards the airport. The collapsed section is sufficient to roll a car.

the increasing amount of cars on Samui is astonishing and somehow worrying, traffic jams getting regular and we getting used to that. There a cars, cars and cars, even in the smallest Sois and shortcuts. No more 30 minutes Chaweng to Nathon. A clear sign of the times is the huge amount of parked cars on streets without parked cars not so long ago.....it's crazy.
