Cos they're deaf, dumb, blind and stupid. Oh, and great at doing as they are told for a small fee.

That attitude is exactly why they will never support the 'Democrats' and Yellow Shirts who think and talk about the workers and farmers in that feudal way. It's why Suthep and his backers want to get rid of democracy - too demeaning to have to actually make policies that the majority might vote for.

That "attitude" is a direct quote from one of those more enlightened farmers in the North referring to other farmers who can't see beyond the next free handout.

So far their call for rallies at Rajamangala have gone un-headed

living within earshot of the stadium there is a constant drone of hat appears like vezuvelas going off, reminds me of South Africa world cup. An occaisional red and white chopped circle the stadium ... but that is it. IMO I would be surprised if there is not that 10K inside. Hopefully their rallying cry will be just as quiet this weekend.

Near empty seats in the 40,000 stadium. only parts of the pitch was occupied with a few rural (guess mainly) Thai people.

This was shown on most channels last eve. SPASMODIC would be the apt word.

I believe if they get a lot more people this w/e they will want money for being there.

Because of the 200,000 + opposition they cannot be paid- it would break the bank, these are genuine volunteers from all walks of life.

There is no solution. This is just another fight between two feudal clans. Establishment against Shin Clan. And it will get violent, I am afraid.

Most of the Bangkok protester I know, are not at the rallies because the support but opposition government, but because they don't want to see the amnesty (and other related) bills in any form get passed.

My wife has seen the 'yellow' politicians get boo-ed on a 'yellow' stage, when they say they didn't participate in corruption when in power. Actually the don't like either side, they going because of they don't support the bill.

Several of the reds turned up at an anti Govt rally where I live last Sunday.

They did so because they went on buses provided to a previous red rally at the stadium and were paid 200 B and some rice.

When they got there they found out that those who were from Issan had been paid 1,000 B.

That made them feel devalued, for want of a better word.

I did not make this up, the Mrs is one of those who organized that rally and as the reds who were there were known reds they were asked why the went and that is what they said.

Whether they will be talked in to going to BKK again this weekend will I suspect, depend on the payment offered.

This is all not going to end easily this time. Most people have no idea how much Thailand a mess Thailand is politically and economically. The rice pledging scheme cannot end and it cannot continue. So, where is the end game for this? No one knows. This crisis has been brewing for years. The rice pledging scheme should be the undoing of PT, but there is no alternative for the majority to vote for.

There's nothing unique about Thailand. The West has been through it all, but in most countries, 100 to 200 years ago. What is happening in Thailand is a mish-mash of social and political development condensed into a relatively short period of time. This Red/Yellow divide has only developed since the coup in 2006. It was always there, but the colours have delineated the political divide in a frightening way. It is perhaps strange that socialism and leftist ideology seem never to be heard in Thai politics. PT seem to avoid such terms, but they are the nearest to that idealism. Their politics though are more populist than anything much else. In some ways, a healthy cynicism of all Thai politicians helps prevent any belief that the State is there to provide for the people.

The trouble is that this populism leads to such lunacy as the Rice Pledging Scheme. This is nothing other than the State believing that it can interfere with the free market, without disastrous consequences. It can't. The Yellows are right about that and it just fuels their arrogance. Political ignorance and a history of teaching singing and dancing and living for today means that the elite can indeed perpetuate their lifestyles in some weird belief that really they were born superior. With their sons not having to compete as they would have to do in a meritocracy, their lifestyles perpetuates. But keeping the masses ignorant and never have them thinking outside the box also leads in any form of a democracy to populism being there to be exploited by politicians. Thaksin saw this in the early 2000 and made his shrewd political move. The rest is just the natural follow on from that.

If the Red-Shirts don't wish to vote for the Dems, that's up to them and I can see why they might not want to, but why not start a new clean Red-party instead ?

Of course this might require leadership, from their long-time Thaksin-supporting local-leaders, which might result in some of those losing their seats on the gravy-train, but so what ?

Supporting one elite-family, the S-clan, over all the others, has been shown to not be the answer IMO.

And I myself would put the 'skim' at hundreds of billions, not millions. All wealth which might have been used to educate the masses, build-up the infrastructure, establish a better health & social-system, but after almost a decade with Thaksin-led parties these things just haven't happened, and the corruption is worse than ever.

Yes and because of Suthep's inflammatory and increasingly deranged language and his desire to change the peaceful massprotests into a revolution, this has been seen as a "red rag to a bull" to the redshirts <pun intended> and has given them an excuse to also go beyond peaceful massdemonstration themselves, which as we know from recent history, is a opportunity they are more than ready to embrace. The Anti-govt massprotests made a monumentally powerful statement when they called out so many hundreds of thousands peacefully, but when they started occupying buildings and causing disruption beyond mere traffic jams, they lost the authority to tell the red-shirts to also protest peacefully and to obey the law. Suthep's more recent actions and statements have made confrontation almost inevitable, whereas when it was just massprotest / placards / leaflets, the antigovt people had the floor and could criticise any affronts committed by the reds.

The rice scam has cost the country hundreds of billions, but only in baht terms. Using a rough B30 to the dollar conversion rate, that would still make Thaksin more than 30 times worse, and he managed that in a 2 year period. Are your loyalties a little confused?

Pro-govt Red Shirts declare major rally Saturday

BANGKOK, Nov 28 – The pro-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plans a massive rally at Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday, its leaders announced.

UDD chairwoman Thida Thavornseth and leading member Jatuporn Prompan last night said the political situation has become critical and they would hold a big rally on Saturday to retaliate key anti-government leader Suthep Thaugsuban.

Mrs Thida called on Mr Suthep to stop intimidating the media and occupying government property – a serious offence that led to chaos among civil servants and the public.

Mr Jatuporn claimed that Rajamangala Stadium will be fully packed on Nov 30 when people will jointly protest against Mr Suthep.

The rally will continue until the former Democrat MP calls it quits, he vowed. (MCOT online news)
