Taking Veg to The UK

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any problems with taking vegetables into the UK?

Hi,

For the last 15 years I have never had any trouble bringing veg back, my wife brings back at least 4 Papaya's and god knows what else home!!!

They never seem to check and we usually fly into Manchester.

Andy

I once got caught with a load of herb, entering the UK stuck up my def and dumb, does this count? Jokes.

I usually carry some mangoes & rambutan, also herbs & eggplant, 'for personal consumption', and haven't had any problems.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but have you had any problems taking rice?

Like most things, depends what, how much, and IF you get caught.

I think you already know the official answer.

Is it really that important and worth the hassle if you get caught ? For some Veg!

Oz yes, UK no.

Fresh lime leaves are banned by Defra. However I think a self imposed ban on exports from Thailand is still in place. It was imposed by the Thai government in 2011 after the EU threatened a ban on Thai vegetables due to high pesticide levels. I have not heard of it being lifted and I doubt that the pesticide levels have declined sufficiently to allow it to be done. Items like Holy Basil available in the UK now nearly always appear to be grown in Cambodia.

Doesn't affect peelable fruit.
