December 6, 201312 yr Please do not assume that ALL f-rangs ever celebrated Christmas so why should they here? Thais do that too. Ugh! JT ... are you saying you never celebrated Christmas? Either here or your birth country? DUH! I just Googled 'Do Jews celebrate Christmas?'. I genuinely never know. My humblest apologies ... Sorry Mate. .
December 6, 201312 yr I am the same I have the tree up now fully decorated. China town in Bkk is a really good place this time of year to get decorations. My wife wants me to celebrate Christmas to, because she like it to My kids love Christmas . I usually wake them up fast in the morning and tell them I hear something down stairs and tell them it is Santa Claus Tell them to hurry up get up let's go see they go down Stairs looking for Santa . They see the milk is gone and cookies are eaten they run out the front door looking for Santa to see if they can see him. So yes we celebrate Christmas in our house every year It is family and friends time Wish every person a very Merry Christmas with good food family and friends
December 6, 201312 yr Tree is up and the house is decorated, gifts wrapped and hidden. Stocked up on a few food goodies on a recent trip to the UK, only problem is I've eaten most of them:) Goose is ordered and we're doing a turkey as well- I'm already excited about leftover turkey sandwiches Best time of the year IMO, however I'm even more excited about next Xmas as the niece informed us yesterday she's pregnant.
December 6, 201312 yr True, Xmas is a time of enjoyment for the kids, but to see how Thailand has embraced the commercialism of Xmas is staggering. Whoopy doo a big xmas tree in the plaza. looks great, but ask a Thai what the significance of it is?? I will miss the Xmas dinner with family, but sure wont miss the 'need' to give presents that most of the time do not get used or wanted.. This year I emailed home saying no Xmas presents as there was a greater need to donate to the Red Cross Philippines typhoon appeal.
December 6, 201312 yr Must admit .. it is sort of quirky to have the TESCO Lassies with Santa Hats on and Christmas Carols being played. From above ... sure, it's commercial ... but like anything in life ... you have the power to control what you filter out and I filter out a lot of that BS. Thais are often more interested in Jan 1, our New Years day as a time for some gift giving.
December 6, 201312 yr Haven't celebrated Christmas (or for that matter Thanksgiving, Easter, Halloween...) for the 10 years I've been married to my Thai wife, and I love it. The day will come and go, and she usually never even mentions it. I'm not at all religious, and being free of all that is quite liberating - no tree to set up, no presents to get, no cards to send, no church to attend, etc. - my kids call to say hello, and that's it! I suppose it can be fun if you have small kids, but I'm finished with all that and don't miss it a bit.
December 7, 201312 yr No. I loved Christmas as a child but as the years went on and it became more and more a commercial event instead of a tradition I grew to dislike it more with every passing year. The wife and I will have Christmas dinner but no decorations just a special meal and thoughts of family back home. Same here, except we celebrate the New Year with some good food and cocktails, and a nice gift for our daughter. A new bicycle this year.
December 8, 201312 yr Author @OP So you totally forgot it was to celebrate the birth of the son of God. actually no I didnt, I was a churchie for quite a few years(my ex bil is a minister), I even used to attend christmas eve services etc but as I got older I realized that religion is a load of garbage and each religion is against the other so I took a self view to it, I believe in god but not religion. As to christmas, I believe it is for the kids, doesnt matter what your religion, kids should always come first. Unfortunately in Australia they stopped doing the school nativity plays etc so they wouldnt offend muslims(same as easter parades, ham sandwiches at schools, etc) so I just like to celebrate it with family now but since living here we havent really done it but this year we will as my wife wants to see what we actually do for christmas.
December 8, 201312 yr Author ....puddings but I doubt I will get the brandied custard and double cream. Hmmmn... I like to taste it. How about the lamb leg, where do you buy that? How are you going to cook it? hey Dgie, no pudding this year, went to Tops at Surat Thani yesterday and they informed us they arent selling them this year so looks like I will miss out unless we can make one but am unsure if we can get the ingrediants. The leg of lamb was from Makro(580 baht), Tops wanted 1450 baht for the same thing, I will be roasting it with slices af garlic inserted into it(fresh rosemary too if I can find some) along with roasted spuds, pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots and minted baby peas, all with pan gravy and mint sauce(tops had it) of course. Got the whipping cream and muscopone for the pudding too(already had the brandy), just need the pudding now. Sorry my posts are all together but I havent been able to post for a few days so I am just catching up.
