็BANGKOK, 10 December 2013 (NNT) – His Majesty the King on Monday approved the royal decree to dissolve the House of Representatives, submitted by the government earlier on the same day.

In submitting the royal decree, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra explained that since the current administration took office in 2011, the government had embarked on promotion of equality among the members of the public. It carried out policies and measures it had earlier declared to Parliament – which included measures for the agriculture, economic and industrial sectors. There were also policies and measures to lift the quality of life of people, by means of boosting domestic purchasing power, strengthening the macro economy, and reviving relations with neighboring countries and the international community.

The government had placed importance in reforming politics, with input from the public. Despite the government's attempt to resolve the conflicts within the country by peaceful means, in accord with the law, the problem could not be ended. Thus, the government saw fit to dissolve Parliament and hold a general election for members of parliament, in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand. In doing so, the administration is returning the power to make political decisions to the entire public, and at the same time is ensuring the continuity of a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy.

Using the authority stipulated within Articles 108 and 183 of the Constitution, His Majesty the King gave royal approval for the royal decree as follows:

Article 1 - This royal decree is to be called 'Royal Decree for Parliament Dissolution, B.E. 2556'

Article 2 - The royal decree takes effect on the day it is declared in the Royal Gazette.

Article 3 - Parliament shall be dissolved to make way for a new election of members of parliament.

Article 4 - The election of members of parliament shall be in the form of a general election on Sunday, February 2, 2014.

Article 5 - The prime minister and the president of the Election Commission shall see to the stipulations within this royal decree.
