I know that you said apart from Rutnin but I found Dr Roy at Rutnin hospital very good. I had mine repaired in 2009 but have been back there quite a few time to have other things looked at. I found this place the best that I have seen.

Do you remember how much it cost? I had one 3 years ago in Chiang Mai and I was quoted $3000 but decided to fly straight home and do it in Aus for $10 000.

Interested just for future reference as it looks like I am prone to them and hope to be living there in the next year.

Not sure why you would rule out the oldest and likely one of the best eye hospitals unless it is cost (which seems to be reasonable and in line with what most others would charge). I do know Vejthani Hospital has a large dedicated eye clinic for the last year with both resident and part time specialists available and new state of the art equipment. Wife had cataract/IOL operations this year at a price of 30k each (which expect is lower than Rutnin).

It cost about 90,000 baht all up. This included 2 or 3 nights in the hospital plus post op consultations. Dr Roy is thai but obviously trained in the US as he speaks with an American accent. Keeps you well informed at all times.

Any "hospital" has the necessary infrastructure. The issue is to find the best doctor. Which requires a specific selection, there is no such thing as a hospita wherein all the doctors will be exclelent.

Need an opthalmologist specializing in retinal disorders. Somke suggestions who look well qualified:

Retinal detachment is an emergency, care should no be delayed.

I had a retinal detachment in Thailand some 8 years ago.

I was diagnosed at Rutnin in the afternoon and flew home to Australia for an operation the next morning.

If I had the operation at Rutnin I would have been unable to fly for the next 6 weeks.

Rutnin would have been my choice but I had to return to Australia for work the following week.

A pneumatic retinopexy procedure as opposed to a scleral buckle was required. This introduced a bubble of gas to position

my retina onto the back of my eye.

This bubble of gas would reek havoc with any change of air pressure.

A retinal detachment is a medical emergency. Time is of the essence
