Wrongly arrested garbage men demand compensation
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Three suspects who were wrongly arrested in a Nakhon Phanom prison drug bust called yesterday for the prison to take responsibility for their wrongful 84-day detention and charges.

Tambon Kham Thao Administration Organisation's former garbage-collectors Sap Mombao, 56; Wathee Wongthi, 50; and Thongchai Homklin, 45; were arrested on September 19 for allegedly possessing the 198 yaba pills and nine cellphones that were found in their garbage truck while they were entering the Nakhon Phanom prison to collect trash.

Earlier this month, the public prosecutor decided not to try them after the Crime Victims' Assistance Club provided information to Provincial Police Region 4 chief Anuchai Lekbamrung leading to the arrest of two members of the prison drug network, who later confessed to putting these items in the truck without the collectors' knowledge.

Wathee said the Bt200 per day compensation paid by the prison was not enough to mend their shattered self-worth and health impacts.

TIT. For poor people, who have been wrongly accused, there is little they can do as the police hold all the cards and the judge will not entertain their pleas of innocence.

Wealthy or powerful people can escape charges and prison relatively easily here by calling in patronage favours and paying off any victims.

That is the way the system is for Thais.

Thailand is portrayed as a devout Buddist Country, something went awry, between Budda,s teachings and the general , complete lack of consideration for those who are poor, makes my bile rise when you see these rich Toads wai and smile as if their shit doesn,t stink. No offence to Mr Toad on TVisa intended.

Let's hope one of the worthy Puea Thai MPs for that province takes up this case and helps these innocent men put their lives back together after spending 3 months wrongly detained.

On the other hand if they'd been smarter they could have claimed attendance at a Sanitary Engineers convention in Singapore and had the detention deferred as other people here seem to do.

The very least that should have been paid was the 300 baht/day wage plus overtime for every 24 hours behind bars. The people who do these types of jobs are no more concern to many, than the soi dogs, although the feeding of the soi dogs may be considered more rewarding than the feeding of those behind bars.
