Pheu Thai rebuffs Election Commission

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai party has rebuffed the Election Commission’s suggestion that the party should hold talks with the People’s Democratic Reform Committee to have the February 2 election postponed.

Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit told the Press Friday morning that there is no provision in the Constitution or any law which will allow the February 2 to be put off, citing Article 108 of the Constitution which states clearly that an election must be staged within 45-60 days after the date of the House dissolution.

He urged the Election Commission not to be distracted by the demand of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee that the poll should be put off. He said that the reason that the PDRC and the Democrat party opposed to the February 2 because they were afraid that they would lose.

Prompong disclosed that several key party figures had already applied to contest the poll with the party, among them are Ms Yingluck Shinawatra and Noppadol Pattana, personal lawyer of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He claimed he had learned that some 2,000-3,000 hardcore protesters from the South would join the mass demonstration this coming Sunday and there might be violent incidents during the demonstration, citing the police capture of about 900 pingpong bombs from a couple in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

The bombs, said Prompong, were believed to be used during the demonstration.

Great news that Nopphadol Pattama is contesting the election and will be in the public eye again. He is without doubt one of the funniest politicians for the outrageous porkies he tells and for his ridiculous long sleeves. This Phua Thai are sending Thailand down the shitter, but by jove they are good for a laugh.

At first they scoffed at the Constitution Court's ruling but now they want to follow the constitution strictly to the letter because it suits them rather than considering anyone else. Right now it should all be about compromise & finding a solution acceptable to both sides.

Another one who does not have the thought process and logic to work out that the whole issue is not about who wins or loses the election, but rather that the whole system needs overhauled to get out of the worsening destructive cycle that it is locked in.

This gent who should be in jail serving the 2 year sentence handed down to him should first have read what the EC had to say about reasons for postponing an election before he opened his big mouth :

Reasons to postpone

_ A poll can be delayed by 30 days via royal decree if there is civil unrest, floods, fire or other eventualities (according to Article 78 of the 2007 Constitution's organic law on elections);

_ If the ballot papers are damaged or lost (according to Article 85 of the 2007 Constitution's organic law on elections);

_ If only one candidate is elected in a constituency and receives less than 20 per cent of the total vote (according to Article 88 of the 2007 Constitution's organic law on elections);

_ A constituency has no MP candidates;

_ The number of MPs is less than 95 per cent of 500 - the compulsory figure that is needed for the House of Representatives to convene (according to Article 93 of the Constitution).

As some appointed Senators suggested that the Feb 2 election could be postponed under Article 187 of the Constitution, Ms Yingluck said this is a new issue which should be thoroughly studied and the forum could help find the best solution to the current political quagmire.

And as has already been pointed out Thaksin was able to postpone elections.

It must be that the police down that way don't like to publicise things the way they do in Bangkok. They are keeping the arrest of a couple with 900 ping pong bombs a secret.

Can you expand on this? Who did he falsely accuse and when?

I guess that would be good reading. At least PTP knows, that he seems to have his way with words...

And about the people realizing, that no government is better than this, let's keep quiet about it. This is a dirty little secret, that may under no circumstabces get out and among the people. That would mean anarchy?!?!?!?

We can't have a situation develop where there is no active government in Thailand in case people start to realise the country runs better without one. smile.png

The Mrs tells me that it is reported on facebook that Prompong Nopparit has just been ordered by the court to report to the court for breaching his bail conditions.

If this true then it is a start, next should be Jutaporn and Nattawat

Interesting fact. If this was the north or northeast, they'd all be out screaming at Yingluck in adoration looking for a handout.

Your comment is off topic, but typical of many on this forum who see it as an opportunity to vent their person beliefs even though they do not have the right to vote in any election in this country and such views as they may have are ignored by the indiginous population.

Do you have anything to say about the Election Commission being told to get on with the job they have been charged to do by Royal decree?

Kim Su Thep does not want elections, he wants an unelected 'government'. With an election, the government is elected for a finite period of time, there is nothing to stop 'The Dear Leader" from putting off elections indefinitely once he removes democracy. Look how he told everyone that he would "hand himself in", a few weeks ago, after one of his 'D Days'. That day passed and he broke his word. Why should anyone trust him to return Thailand to democracy at any time in the future if he is allowed to get away with this nonsense.

Boycott any fake election. This mob of thaksin sicophants can have their soviet /north Korean style election and reap the whirlwind after.The Democratic party must not have any part in the so called "election".

Suthep does want elections. He just wants reform before the elections.

Why should anyone trust Yingluck or PTP with the reconciliation and reform that they have said will happen if they are elected again? After winning the next election, there will nothing to stop them changing the constitution to white wash Thaksin's crimes, removing the Constitution Court, allowing nepotism in the Senate, and removing other checks and balances that they've been trying to do over the last 2 & 1/2 years.

See, scaremongering works both ways.

No, they just don't want to get close to them, even for a photo opportunity.

The one thing that PT seems to have a real handle on "rebuffing any individual or group" that does not support their committments, programs, plans, etc on anything they propose or do..

Their reasoning and excuses are like a one way street, Its just too bad they did not ensure it was wide enough or could have been expanded to even accommidate foot.traffic, much less two people walking/thinking in different directions.
