It is common procedure to allow bail on appeal depending on the seriousness of the crime. The three alleged murderers in the Krabi Bobby Carter case also got bail although they have not officially been convicted. The bail money does go into the court escrow account and can only be refunded on presentation of the receipt in the bail posters name.

Then strangely enough the couple that got 15 years for picking mushrooms in a state forest cant get bail to appeal. Amazing Thailand

And of course let's not forget Uncle SMS who was dying of cancer and could not get bail for his heinous crime

I thought that once convicted, the appeal process takes place whilst you are still in jail. Only in Thailand can a convicted criminal be released when there is an appeal. Justice does not exist in Thailand, not in the real sense anyway

Sigh... Why do people constantly claim that Thailand is unique in these matters? It is not. Here for example, is a Canadian case where the defendant was granted bail after being convicted of second degree murder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Baltovich. I agree this sort of thing shouldn't happen, but it does, and not only in Thailand. So please check your facts before slamming the country...
