Context Menu Items

Featured Replies

After programs installing and unistalling there are often left-over remains in the system.

In my case it is an AccountLogon entry in IE Context menu. I guess, it was added to the Context menu by the AccountLogon application ( http://www.accountlogon.com ) by Rhodes Software, which I have uninstalled quite some time ago.

Now, every time I click on AccountLogon, I get an Error Message:

AccountLogon Error

ActiveX component can't create object.

There is also an entry in my HijackThis log:

O8 - Extra context menu item: AccountLogon - C:\WINDOWS\al-popup-michael.html

How I can delete this AccountLogon from the IE Context menu?

My system:

--

OS - Win XP Pro SP2 and IE v.6

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ @ 2000MHz

MB - ASUS A8N-SLi Premium w/(2x1024) 2GB Corsair DDR 400MHz

HDD - 300GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 16MB SATA-II NCQ

VGA - ASUS eXtreme Nvidia GeForce N6600GT 128MB DDR3

PSU - CoolerMaster Real Power 550W

Case - CoolerMaster Centurion 532

Have you tried deleting the O8 entry with HijackThis?

HiJackThis keeps a backup, so it should be possible to restore the entry if necessary.

I've tried to uncheck it in the Autoruns of Sysinternals, and it didn't help.

I want to delete the registry entry it points to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Internet Explorer \MenuExt\AccountLogon...

- just a little hesitant to do so without a confirmation from the experts...

Go ahead and delete the registry entry. You can save it first if you are too paranoid, but there shouldn't be any issues.

Of interest the list of programs that add bits to the context menu in windows explorer are in the registry under:

hkey_classes_root\*\shellex\contextMenuHandlers

If you just delete an entry the associated context junk disappears.

Normal warning back up registry etc etc

Thanks to all for the responses.

First of all, I have deleted the a/m registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Internet Explorer \MenuExt\) and the AccountLogon disappear from the IE Context menu. So far so good.

Secondly, I have found a nice FREE little utility called ToolbarCop ( http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm ). And it comes with Usage instructions for ToolbarCop utility ( http://www.winhelponline.com/tbchelp.htm ).

ToolbarCop - Description

------------------------

ToolbarCop is a browser extensions manager which can disable or eliminate

the following browser add-ons selectively from Internet Explorer:

* Unwanted Browser Helper Objects (BHO)

* Toolbars (Tool Band)

* Standard Toolbar buttons

* Context menu Extensions

* Download managers

* Protocol Handlers

* Horizontal / Vertical Explorer Bars (side-search bars)

* Startup applications originating from RUN registry keys.

Hopefully, this utility will be helpful to board members. And maybe need to announce it in a special separate post.
