New tourist tax?

Featured Replies

G'day mates,

Is there a new tourist tax being introduced? Any info on when and how much?

Merry Xmas :)

Been going back and forth now for months with nothing conclusive. Yet.

If they do implement it, it will add a little less than 1% to the cost of your trip to Thailand. Less than 0.5% if you're flying business class. About 0.25% if you're planning to spend any sweaty tourist money here during your trip.

Though being a tourism entrepreneur, I have never heard about this tax, can anybody enlighten me?

I presume the Op means the 500 Baht tourist tax/medical insurance that was announced some time ago.

It's never been held out as medical insurance, though the medical reimbursement aspect has been touted to make the tax increase palatable. Misguidedly, IMO.

It's a tax increase, with some small portion (appx 12 baht out of 500 baht) of that money to be used to reimburse health care providers who treat foreigners that can't or won't pay for their treatment.

Anyone who believes it will entitle them to no-charge medical treatment will be in for a rude awakening. They will still be expected to pay -just like they do today- with all the consequences still in place for those who can't or won't pay.

No, there isn't a new tourist tax. Someone suggested it, but doubt it will happen. People suggest lots of things that never happen. To many people get over exciting about these things.
