New tax on tutors, medical staff, vendors proposed: Thailand

There could be a lot tax to collect if they were to tax bar ladies extra income.

Don't fear. All illegal activities are heavily "taxed" by the police. How do you think the bar fine and drinks bill is divvied up?

Anyway, this announcement is not related to illegal activites such as living off immoral earnings or prostitution.

maybe they could try taxing mp's instead and all the money they take from the trough, that would be more than enough to cover everything.

Broadening the tax base is a good idea, except to those now included. But it seems that lately there is a sudden rush to increase income with new and increased taxes proposed and increased excise.

Either the PTP piggies have gotten extra greedy, or the rice scam has pulled the plug on the trough. The logical thing to do is replace the plug by dropping the scam rather than trying to open the fill taps further, but TIT.

You are probably half right here. There is another aspect though. The ASEAN agreements about tax rate alignment and intra-regional trade have forced Thailand to reduce corporation tax rates and scrap some excise on intra-ASEAN imports so there has been other downward pressure on government revenues. But certainly the rice farmer giveaway is running at a significant loss to the Treasury.

Hey, they could tax the use of English. Tax it by the word (or even syllable).

Sign tax is far higher for signs in English than in Thai. Ever noticed pubs and restaurants have the name of the bar written in Thai in little letters on the sign underneath FRED'S BAR or whatever. It is to reduce the sign tax.

So your suggestion is already in operation.
