Is Pattaya Any More Dangerous Than Bangkok?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

During the past few weeks of Pattaya bashing, it has become clear that a lot of the bashers seem to derive some perverted pleasure in sneering and rubbishing Pattaya from their homes and offices in their traffic jam free, pollution free, sleaze free, and most important – crime free – town of Bangkok

So being the sad person that I am, with nothing much better to do, I have been browsing through some ‘general’ topics on TV Forum, and came across two threads, (one current and one started last year which is once again current), which gave me a rare insight on what our ‘High Society’ colleagues (as opposed to us ‘low life sexpats’) really think of crime in their beloved town.

Here are just a few snippets from page upon page of posts.

………Where have you been living? Over the past decade, Bangkok has definitely become a much more dangerous place to live. I hardly dare walk into the soi alone after dark anymore. The motorcycle gangs often hide in the sub-sois waiting to pounce. They usually do so at then end of the month, when everyone's wallets are fat from their paychecks. Usually, they're after women's handbags. It's not so bad for us guys (we don't even have to worry about construction workers whistling at us!), but I know plenty of women who are terrified to walk anywhere after dark, esp in the sois. And don't count on cab drivers, who are always trying to rip you off, and, if they happen to have a lone female passenger, well... God knows what they could do...

…….Meanwhile, the crime situation in BKK has deteriorated markedly……

……. compared to many other cities in the region, such as in Japan, S Korea, HK or S'pore, BKK is definitely more dangerous……

……………If you want to have a look - go on Saturdays, after midnight, anywhere along that stretch between Bang Na and Samut Prakan Ampur Muang and you can't miss the fun, especially good are Srinakarin and Puchao Road. Be careful though and DO NOT enter the smaller sois at that time of the night. Not on foot and not on a bike as chances are high that you will be held up……….

…………… there've been a couple of instances when our maid was almost mugged while walking from our home to the bus stop at night. It's usually a group of two or three motorcycle drivers hiding in the mini-sois: they're just waiting to jump out, snatch your purse and ride away.……….

It's not locals who are doing this, the culprits are likely transients - construction workers or day laborers who have no roots in the community. If something isn't done, scenes like this are only going to become more common…..

…….Riding the bus is especially dangerous if you're a woman. Those drivers often don't stop at bus stops, they just slow down……...

……I know of an incident a couple months back when a motorcyclist killed a pedestrian……...

………Thank God we don't have clusters of big achiwah (technical schools) in central BKK. They're mostly on the outskirts, and they're hotbeds of gang activity. Just be careful if you plan on parking your car in the Tha Phra or Rama II area…..

…..I have serious difficulties to understand why exactly people who have lived in Bangkok often for years are not aware that this is not anymore the happy-go-lucky place it was pre crises. I mean, it is not exactly unreported that the industrial suburbs of Bangkok are gangland central nowadays, with rapidly worsening conditions…………

…………….. Go to police stations and ask the officers about rape and gang violence in Bangkok…………

……….I live in a tourist area and witness some real lowlife Farangs walking around, a small percentage seem to be looking for trouble…….

…..I even saw a guy at Suan Plu Immigration one day, without a shirt! ######, I felt like beating the crap of this guy……

…….. Like having our own drinking areas where locals can not get in, where we can ogle naked local women and sh@g them at our will, and treat the local guys like second class citizens. And when some of them have had enough and decide to beat up one of us, complain that their society/race/nation is violent, and that where we come from things are so much better....

………When i first got upcountry i asked some locals "Is there any bad people I should watch out for here?" They said "Don’t worry, they all go Bangkok" ………

………. has a good handle on what goes on here in Sukhumvit. I too know that some of the biz people running the late night drink stalls carry guns. With all the drunken belligerent farangs, who can blame them?............

…….We drove on Rachada and stopped at the red traffic light Rachada/Rama IX, right opposite Fortune Town. Y and I were talking, and waiting for the traffic light to turn green, when all over sudden something hit me from behind. Then I turned around and I saw that Y was lying on the road. Three young motorcycle gang boys were stabbing him with knifes and machetes and beating him up with from what I remember a wood stick, about the size of a bat. They stabbed him in his back, totally smashed his knee, cut his right hand, and beat him at several other parts around his body……...

…..I was walking home alone the same night this above incident occurred and I was attacked from behind with a blow from some object to the left side of my head then had a bottle smashed in my face by someone I had not seen. I got to my feet and sprinted dizzily for a taxi. I had blood pissing out of my face ……..

…….Thai people are murdered every day and they never even make the back pages……...

…………… there was a bank raid last week. I saw the helicopters(4 of them) going over my house trying to catch the guys……

…………2 days ago, a guy known to my wife, who sells the Thai traditional ice-cream from his motorbike come freezer, was stopped on the main road near my house. He was killed for not giving the muggers 300 baht! ……

….. After going to Patpong for 5 years (never had a problem), I decided once to try the upstairs bar for a change. Oh well. Terrible girls and of course the usual 300 Baht beer every 1/2 hour. When I got the bill, I didn't say anything, I just paid and left immediately because I have heard those crazy stories about farang being beat up in the show bars for not paying the bills………

…………There are really so many vicious attacks against foreigners on the streets of Bangkok recently. …..

…….The victim died in hospital. And survivor said he is so surprised that the Thai police did not contact him about the murder at all and show absolutely no interest in this case……… because a police told him they see this every night and used to it.

…… It happened in the back of Kao San Road last week or so. A place called Bangkok Bar. I was drinking with 2 friends next to the bar then suddenly saw all the securities were beating the ###### out of a foreign guy. He was covered with blood and lied unconscious on the street and these bar securities still no stop and continued to kick him on the face and his head……

……… I have seen so many senseless vicious bar fights among Thai guys and all happen like this………

………… He just came to Thailand from Sweden on his second trip to Bangkok. He was taking out money at a ATM near On Nut about 8 PM. Suddenly some thugs smacked his head from behind. He dropped his withdrawn money and his ATM card but was able to run dizzily away to the street and got a taxi and ran away…………….

…..Bangkok crime is getting more vicious recent years. Years ago most foreigners only involved in shopping scams or pick pockets, but recently the violent crimes against foreigners have escalated to a vicious level and almost on a everyday basis. ……

……Because of the police and government inability and empathy, these street thugs including these low scum bar securities will strike again anywhere anytime against any foreigner………

Patters seems like a large sleepy village when you put it into perspective :o

Well Mobi I fear your points will fall on deaf ears with the usual suspects.

‘High Society’ colleagues (as opposed to us ‘low life sexpats’)

Well Im glad you have the labelling correct! :D

In the interest of fairness and a little trolling Mobi I think you should compare the BKK news clippings with the Pattaya news clippings, as alot of what you quoted are unsubstantiated rumours as oppose to the Pattaya bashers who have been largely commenting on official police reports of murders, stabbings, shootings, suicides, child abuse etc. in Patters.

I think as well when people are commenting on the dangers of an area they are commenting from a 'violence on farang' perspective rather than crime on the Thai people. Pattaya does seem to have the edge there.

I'd say BKK can be dangerous in the wrong areas, but it does seem like Pattaya is just one bad area sometimes, or at least thats the impression I get from Brit's news clippings.

I find it hard to believe that it is just all biased news reports, the Phuket forum, Koh Samui forum and Bangkok forum fall far behind the Pattaya forum when it comes to news on violence happenings towards or from farangs.

u may now all flame me. :o

BKK...........i/ll hazard a guess you dont know half of what goes on in BKK mainly because unlike Patters it doesn't get reported the way it does in Pattaya?..................with all due respect of course. :o

Mobi ... the Thread that has no become current again ... that you qouted so liberally above .....

strangely was undocumented at all in the press ... not documented at BUIC ... etc

the ColPyat quotes are NOT from BKK ... they are from Samut Prakarn ....

But it's a GREAT try to change the ideas ..... <misleading and inaccurate ? completely! >

Please watch the papers ... watch embassy report ... is BKK safer? Absolutely if you are a farang .... we ALL know there is no way to determine for Thais at all :o

No smiley with a flame gun handy :D

But actually. I don't look at the other subforums (Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, ect). Do they have someone like Brit posting news articles relevant to thier areas, in those forums ?

We all know (well, most of us do) that Brit has a secret agenda when it comes to posting bad news about Pattaya. Perhaps if someone were to take a page from his book, and start posting mostly "doom and gloom" stories that feature farangs, in the Chang Mai or Phuket forums, then soon those places would sound like they too are out of control.

Then again, we don't want to scare people away from those areas now, do we ? :o

Watching the Pattaya news last night it actually appears like the police are having successes in chatching the bad guys. There must have been at least 6 different reports of where the Police had caught the Gold / Bag / Money snatchers. Good on them, I just hope they start catching the b@stards with the guns !

:o:D:D

Jd, there you go again with your wicked ways - trying to deceive the good folks of Pattaya.

The Colpyat quotes (which were not from the most quoted thread - as you well know), were most certainly mainly about BKK, and he actually mentions BKK in his unedited post more than 5 times. In any event I would say that Bang Na and that surrounding Samut Prakan area are as much a part of Bkk as Wandsworth is of London.

The main thread, from which most of the quotes were taken, and NOW resurrected, is entitled:

"Bangkok At Night Turns Violent Inferno Now, countless attacks to foriengers recently"

There's no less than 12 pages of it, and I invite readers to go there and judge for themselves. Being a long time ex Bangkok resident myself, I refute the accusation that my thread is misleading and inaccurate, as I know fuill well what a dangerous place Bangkok is - it just doesn't get the same sensationalist press coverage that Pattaya receives.

BKKmadness, Between eye witness reports and the Pattaya gutter press? I know who I'd rather believe. And did you notice comments such as: "The police don't bother too much about murders as they happem every day"; and "Most murders don't even get on the back pages".

THaiflyer: Believe it or not, I don't take it personally. I believe I have stated countless times that I am very happy here in Pattaya and the bashing has no effect on me, my family or my life style. Indeed, I could claim (but don't) that the bashing has nothing to do with me as I live 12 kms outside Central Pattaya, and rarely enter the "sleaze zone" (well except for brief trips to the library :D )

It's just I have this uncontrollable urge to stick up for the under dog, who in this case happens to be Pattaya and its residents, who are subjected daily to this <deleted> that Pattaya and it inhabitants are one great cesspit, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. There... and my fingers haven't even broken out in a sweat. :D

Back to the bashers..... :D

LOL Mobi ... that thread started (and was most quoted) by a guy that referenced NO reports .... all Bullshit :D

Yes ColPyat mentions BKK but describes Industrial estates outside of BKK .... he doesn't aways (imho) rely on accuracy all the time to make his point. Samut P is NOT BKK ... the area he describes is industrial estates ... READ that as low wage ... crime infested .... why he chooses to live there? who knows ... but since it aint BKK no matter how many times you use the word BKK ..... :o doesn't really matter

Look at the Pattaya thread with REAL reports ... and the Newsthread with the murders .... they are in Pattaya ....

Really scroll the threads ... look at NewsClippings and the local threads for BKK and Pattaya ... tell us which has more reports of crime/violence against foriegners

Well now jd..... I'm not too sure who's full of bullshit or even what your motives are?

Why are you so obsessed with news reports vs eye witness accounts? I know which ones I'd rather believe.

The op on that thread quoted from a witness statement which was posted in full of page 4 of that thread, and the second part of the op's post was his own personal eye witness acoount of another incident.

Again, if you bother to read the thread, you will find that a re-ocurring theme is not so much that violence is on the increase in BKK, but that so much of it goes unreported - I don't know how many times we have told you this, but you just stick to your regurgitated crap about "if it's not in the newspapers then it didn't happen."

As for ColPyat's posts - well I ask you, would he keep quoting crime in Bangkok if he meant crime in Timbuktu?

I know you were having a right old pissing contest with him on this subject, so I won't start another one, but feel welcome piss away if it makes you feel better, I'll let the readers be the judge. :D

Right ... shootings etc that NO paper reports ,,,, no Embassy gets involved in .... The School doesn't acknowledge ...

and yes You selectively quoted Colpyat as he does later say that the machete wielding moto gangs are in fact in S.P, :-) Where he lives ... and why he won't let his nieces wear tight fitting clothes 555

But hey ... you had to dig up the fictitious reported other thread from 6+ MONTHS ago to get a good violence thread on BKK :D ... have you looked at the Pattaya sub-forums top 3 pages (covering just a few days? ...

Sure ... let them judge for themselves .... Pattaya gets more reports of violence against farang than ALL the rest of Thailand put together! and yet has what ... 10% of the population of BKK? <who knows how many farang actually live where) It IS likely that this is due to the party atmosphere of Pattaya .... way more drinking spots per sq. KM than anywhere I have seen! Not to mention the reason MANY people choose to go there (Thai and Farang)

But Mobi .... we know YOU never go to those drinking spots or nightlife venues :D:o

(BTW I would like to again thank my host of last weekend's party ... as always Pattaya was fun!

Finished pissing yet jd? :D

Or are you like me, getting a little 'senior' and it tends to come out in dribbles? :D

It was pissing with rain here this morning - my golden was sodden from head to foot and jumped on me and I was sodden too. The joys of of dog owning, family loving retirement in gorgeous Pattaya :D

But why? Do you get paid to rubbish Pattaya or are you just plain mean spirited? :o

BTW I thought Chihuahuas were for ladies and the infirm??? - are you either of these, by any chance? :D

Well done, Mobi D'ark. You have successfully, beyond any doubt, proven convincingly that the perceived, out of control high, serious crime rate in Pattaya is nothing more than a myth. :o

Bangers.............I think you may have a problem. :D

Mobi - I have no doubt that BKK is more dangerous than Pattaya. Population and crime statistics alone will easily prove that, more numbers generally equate more crime.

As for Farang - dunno think Samui might have the inevitable more farang related crime.

Well, if it gets to be too much of a problem I could always change sides. :D

It would be a piece of piss to cut 'n' paste a load of quotes from the Patters threads, as we all know so well : :D

Makes you think eh?...

darling ......i have said on many occasions this is a wild west town.....we tend to invite

the wrong people, and will not help the long term development of this area, because the

good people are not comming.................. look around you to morrow would you include

on you xmas crd list :o

I've spent a fair bit of time in both, and have to say I've never been the victim of a violent crime yet. The only time that nearly happened was when I was foolishly down a dark soi in Bangers late at night and legged it out of there, barely infront of them!

Thank goodness I was ten years younger and sober at the time. :o

I agree with Brit. Stay aware of your surroundings and don't go looking for trouble and it will seldom find you in this fair city by the sea.
