In case of a Coup.. The 2006 experience

Considering the worst case scenario (well, perhaps not even the worst ..xunsure.png.pagespeed.ic.E7Vo3qsmeC.png) .. in the case of a military coup .. I'd like to understand the impact on the daily life of a tourist .. those who lived through the coup of 2006 may remember what happened? airports closed? curfew?, difficulty moving? .... everywhere in Thailand? and how long the situation has been really difficult?

I remember that many TV channels were blocked so I could not watch BBC news.....but otherwise I saw nothing that would suggest that there had been a coup.

Everyday life was not much affected by the coup, except access to some websites blocked and some magazine were not delivered.. the usual thing and army does to silence any possible opposition.

Then they presented themselves on TV... I remember... they looked like they all suffer from constipation. What a pathetic picture of self-serving incompetence!

I was here:

One after the other TV channel was replaced with a slide show and music...standby for announcement.

Incl. CNN.

Than they told their story...all Thaksins censorship on the internet was turned off with the comment that who is smart enough to use internet can build their own opinion.

than I daily checked a well known "women without clothes" page to see when the censorship is turned on again.

There was curfew but noone cared about it.

The Bangkok people handed flowers and food to the soldiers

Fast tour agencies offered tours to tanks for tourists. There are a million photos from fat farangs in short trouser holding the army rifle and try to make a Rambo face with the thin Thai soldier standing beside. Or children on the MG of tank.....

It was the only government that seemed to care about the people...unfortunately they did a poor job with the constitution.

Below is a photo of my staff of gardeners during the last coup.

would they be interested in trimming my bush ?

Sorry. As you can see they are all hi so Thai/Chinese college educated rich girls and will be helping to oust the present Thai government in Bangkok.

Understood, as once they finish ousting the goverment they will go back to Chula to finish their double doctorates in Nuclear physics, and one assumes they would also need to hand their military uniforms back to their Army General Fathers ?

I don't think that this uniform will look too good on their fathers.

Business as usual ...... coffee1.gif ...

For those who like to see antique weapons it is a chance to see the Walker Bulldog Tank. It's noisy, fuel hungry and too heavy for air transport. It's also named after Walker, a guy who got killed in a jeep accident in Korea.

Coups in this day and age are something of an antique and so is this tank having been designed at the end of WWII. Which is a good thing because almost all of the German tanks during WWII would have made bratwurst out of this Bulldog.

Lets be realistic how many uses does one find for a 50 year old tank? It's coups or the museum.

i really wonder how this time, they will justify one more coup...

because of violence and to unite the country.....but actually the gun in the hand is enough justification
