Hello,

Since I do not eat red meat I am very interested in chicken & fish. Is the grouper, snapper, salmon & trout available in Chiang Mai or is it only available south in Bangkok? Thank you for any info you can provide.

Thai fish sucks and taste sand in general. Plus Thai cook over saturate them with spice to kill the flavor. The sushi fishes are all imported.

Do not tell the truth, all the ones eating local <deleted> will be shocked !

ocassionally thai fish are ok but generally they taste of the dirty water they come from, you really need fish from well off shore before the taste gets any good, With all the chemicals and rubbish they dump in the water its hard to find nice tasting ones but that is just my opinion.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Snapper is a wonderful fish so long as it is not over cooked which is often the case. I prefer it steamed myself.

Sea Bass and Bream are also great but like snapper, cannot be considered Thai fish.

The missus does an excellent job of red snapper & tamarind sauce, one of my favourites

Nice one mate. Snapper is a top fish but needs to be cooked with care so if the missus is doing it well she is a choice catch also.

If I am reading your comments correctly I should not eat Chiang Mai fish in restaurants or food stands but only frozen fish I would buy in the grocery stores?

No & you shouldn't pull a face when the wind changes either!

You're supposed to clean them properly before you eat them!

Snapper is not a species of fish but a marketing term. Many species are sold as snapper including tilapia. Not uncommon in southern Thai island resort areas to see tilapia (bpla nin and tubtim) sold as snapper. This is also the case worldwide.

yes perhaps you could post a picture of this snapper, my reference to a snapper would be to a fish that is only found in cold sea water and consequently i have never seen in thailand. but different countries have different names for different fish so to be clear you really need to post a picture.

Go for the Dory, beautiful !!

The 'dory' often sold in supermarkets here is a Vietnamese catfish. Not to be confused with John Dory:)

even John Dory is the name for two completely different fish in its native country.

once again, you need to post pictures of the fish you are talking about. get'em from http://fishbase.org if not elsewhere.

My favorite one is red snapper, usually available almost everywhere I'd reckon to try a shark steak, if you find a place to buy some. Arroi maak.-wai2.gif

They catch a 2 to 5 kilo Mackerel this time of year off Chanthaburi, it is almost as good as swordfish! The meat is cut in fillets the width of the fish and they cook like a T bone steak.

My favourite fish soup is - Dom pla! I have no idea what type of fish is used in this dish though...

Most people who live in Isaan have most likely tried it once or twice. Simple to cook & very healthy :)

hmpf: more terminology differences, fillets in my vocab are cut lengthwise and avoid going through the backbone, while chunks/cuttlets are cut across/through the backbone
