Lite Beer
Northern farmers to blockade Asian Highway BANGKOK: -- Farmers from five northern provinces will blockade the Asian Highway and heighten their protest to oust the caretaker government after the government failed to pay them as promised today. Farmer leader Kittisak Ratanawaraha, president of the Network for Northern Farmers, said now farmers from Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Sukhothai, Kamphaengpet and Phitsanulok are prepared for the next move to block the highway after they did not receive money from the bank as they were earlier promised. He said instead of calling for money, now farmers will press for the ouster of the caretaker government. He said farmers will block the Asian Highway from Phitsanulok to Nakhon Sawan at Yaek Po-ngam intersectin in Bung Narang district on Friday. Some farmers from Phichit were paid but many were not after they were told that the bank has been allocated merely180 million baht.Meanwhile farmers in some northeastern provinces were also paid for their rice today.A total of 40,000 farmers in Maha Sarakham province in the Northeast sold rice to the government under the rice-pledging scheme. Now 10,000 of them were paid but the rest were not paid yet. Popular Post tomacht8
Just a thought beside from the criminal code.§ 385 Any person who, without lawful authorisation and without necessity, obstructs a public way by placing or leaving any object on it or by any other act to such an extent that the traffic safety or convenience is likely to be disturbed shall be liable to a fine not exceeding five hundred baht. So you can block a highway: 15 Dollar (500 Baht) fine max (no joke, real law).Anyway,I can understand the farmers, Same same, i do not like, if people not pay there debs on time as promised. And some farmers waiting still 5 months!May Suthep can take a break, and let the farmers come to Bangkok with their pitchforks. Popular Post djjamie
No surprises from a populist demagogue riddiled government. Academics and "pro 15 principle of democracy" farangs predicted this 2.5 years ago, BUT the PTP said the academics were wrong! The pro "1 principle of democracy" supporters said the farangs where wrong too. I can see why the PT are pushing for high speed trains now. All the roads will be blocked.

Popular Post Crushdepth
Worst part is that the delayed payment has screwed up some farmers cash flow, forcing them to borrow on very unfavourable terms and doing wonders for their indebtedness rather than lifting their standard of living. Having introduced such a ridiculous policy which has also undermined Thailand's export trade it is intolerable that the government should fail to pay the farmers.

Agree with just about everything you say here except for one thing. This idiotic scheme hasn't undermined Thailand's rice export industry. It has completely destroyed it.

Pichit farmer commits suicide because rice mortgage payment worth 200,000 baht from Yingluck government is 4 months overdue. 1st it was Thaksin ordering the murder of drug dealers with no proof. Then it was his policies making farmers kill themselves. AND Jurapong wants human rights because he can't turn his HD TV on! The north is ripe for a party to spring up with real policies and integrity, it dosn't need PTP like it needs them and when the people realise that itll be game over for PTP and its powerbase:)

I wonder if ALL government workers now get a minimum 15K a month, and if all first car buyers will get their money. PT really have outdone themselves. There's seeming no money left in the kitty. Anyone could see this coming yet millions still voted for them. And millions will again vote for them, driving Thailand into a hole that will be very difficult to climb out of. I hope northern voters are starting to wise up.

Their lives are hard and (sometimes) hopeless enough. They made a disastrous decision in voting for the rice subsidy. But hardly unexpected. Self interest. It's just that a master political opportunist recognized the opportunity to exploit these people for his own gain. Not that the other side is all that smart or altruistic either. But these people were had, and it will effect them and impoverish them for generations. That's not good for the region or the country. I know for a fact that they are paid it comes from my wife's second cousin who is one of Taksins organisers and takes 10% for whatever votes and protestors she could get. Taksin has screwed her and not paid so she's gone to a better provider She does however have a living to make and it seems she has no choice but she's hoping Taksin will up anti so she can pay for her merc or order another of course they were Suphet paid 500 baht per protestor and 1,000 for each farmer who says they want government out
Misterwhisper
Just wondering: Are these the same people who are going to vote again for the "Pheua Thaksin Party" if they're only told convincingly enough that heaven will descend onto them and there will be enough free dosh to go around to make everybody rich within 6 months? OTOH, it's good to see that they've finally woken up. As always in Thailand, it's money - or rather the lack thereof - that makes people open their eyes and see things for what they really are. Popular Post Scamper
This is such a sea change to the Thaksin northern coalition, that it needs to taken special note of. These farmers no longer want to protest their missed payments. They want the ouster of the Yingluck administration. These are ( former ) Pheu Thai, Thaksin supporters. And they want them out. And it is more than possible that they will not be paid in the coming weeks. Simply put, the money is not there. And what is there, either can't be accessed because of campaign fund restrictions, or because this very programme is now under very heavy oversight scrutiny. So now the farmers and banks are rebelling against the same administration. The northern rice farmers and the national banks. Together. Now that is a coalition one doesn't see every day !
