Police to play tough against World Cup betting

The Royal Thai Police delivered its brand new task yesterday in order to keep the illegal betting on World Cup football results away as the tournament approaches.

The spokesperson of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Lt Gen Ajiravidya Suphannabhesaj (อชิรวิทย์ สุพรรณเภสัช), said the circulation of multi-billion-baht betting money is detected during football seasons notably in the quadrennial FIFA World Cup.

Pol Lt Gen Ajiravidya said the Royal Thai Police had delivered concentrated preventive and suppressive approaches, by deploying the police manpower into sensitive units of the society such as in schools and universities where youngsters are easily attracted into this vicious business.

Expressing concern over the completeness of the task, Pol Lt Gen Ajiravidya said football result betting business in this modern world can now be done over the Internet as this kind of gambling is one huge worldwide network, both legal and illegal in different countries. Hence the difficulty in suppression as solid evidence must be acquired.

However, he said police forces alone would not suffice to put a halt on such underground operations. He then urged parents and teachers of Thai youths to keep both eyes on their children or students' behaviours.

Brand new task? Seems like this same song-and-dance is hauled out every time there is a major global sporting event.

So many tasks... Wonder where the boys in brown get the time to sit around drinking tea, as they always seem to do out where I live....

Prisons ban live World Cup TV to prevent gambling

BANGKOK: -- Prisons throughout Thailand were ordered not to allow inmates to watch live matches of the World Cup 2006 on television, but to show them recorded competitions on tapes to prevent gambling, said a senior official on Friday.

Corrections Department Director-General Nathee Chitsawang told TNA that with approach of the World Cup 2006 matches, scheduled for June 9-July 9, the department had issued a circular to every prison nationwide to ban football gambling among inmates.

He said during the games, prison official must refrain from turning on television for inmates--despite it being a primary leisure activity inside prisons.

He said to keep prisoners entertained and to avoid gambling at the same time, football matches should be recorded on tapes and be shown to

prisoners afterward.

Meanwhile, Bang Kwang Central Prison Director Sophon Thitidharmmapreuk, said his facility had put inmates who gamble in isolation cells for separation and to prevent them from orchestrating football gambling.

He said officials would strictly control convicts' purchases of personal consumer goods, in particular cigarettes and soft drinks, which they could use as substitutes for cash in gambling.

''Inmates who breach this rules will face drastic punishment, including not receiving family visits and having their right to appeal for a pardon to be revoked,'' he said.

The prison director said inmates who tend to gamble were mostly those convicted for minor crimes and waiting for court to delivery verdicts.

''There are around 800 of them," he said, "and warders are keeping a close watch for any gambling. These men are daring as they know they are not facing capital punishment and could be out soon.''

''We have around 125 inmates who have been sentenced to death and they are well-behaved for fear of not receiving a pardon if caught in football gambling,'' the prison director said.
