A police officer was arrested in the capital’s Chamkarmon district on Saturday night after allegedly shooting the manager of the restaurant where he was eating, Phnom Penh Municipal Police officer Chea Saroeun said.

According to Saroeun, third lieutenant Srun Namkea, 28, an officer in the intervention police department of the Ministry of Interior, was arrested about midnight at Bopha Chamkarmon Restaurant for allegedly badly injuring manager Sok Mach, 29, who was attempting to close the restaurant.

“[Namkea] got drunk, and he got angry with the victim for closing the restaurant and asking for payment from him for the beers and meals, so he fired a bullet into the victim’s hip, causing him to be seriously wounded and pass out on the spot,” Saroeun said.

The suspect was stopped by security guards on his way out of the restaurant, and held until police arrived, he added.

Namkea is expected to be sent to court today for official charges of illegally using a weapon and causing injury.
